I just got my mechanical keyboard in the mail

The Razer BlackWidow Ultimate.

Note: I am going to base everything I say compared to my Lycosa.

I have to say, it certainly feels very nice. I especially like how after the key registers, the key doesn't continue going down. It feels like it clicks, and stops. It feels like I can lift my fingers off the key faster and type more accuractely.

But I just did about ten typing tests and I found that I consisently can type faster on my Lycosa than on this (I am typing this on my BWU right now). I've consistently gotten about 10-20 wpm faster on my Lycosa compared to my mechanical (~120 wpm on Lycosa vs ~100-100 wpm on BWU)
Probably just a learning curve thing.

In the end though I don't really feel mechanical keyboards are amazing as many people claim it to be. It does feel more solid, that's for sure, but perhaps I am expecting too much because many people here on the forums say rubber dome to mechanical is like night and day.

I am going to return this. Sucks though, I actually really do like it, but it's not worth my $100.

That is all.

By the way, does anyone know if I need to install the Razer drivers in order to do on-the-fly macro recording.

For me, the difference was instant. I was actually taken aback by the difference in feeling, and I don't think I could ever go back to a rubber dome. It isn't terrible, but they all feel flexy and mushy to my fingers, like I'm not sure when I'm actually actuating the key so I just have to type hard.

Now I make more mistakes on the rubber dome and fly on the mechanical.

But if it isn't worth it to you - it isn't worth it.

Give it a few days before you decide to return it (after a few days try going back to your Lycosa).

But yes, I think the hype about them partly creates a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I can't stand my cousins lycosa. It just feels so squishy with rubber domes and rubber keys. Plus the keys attract dust and fur.

I haven't used a mechanical yet, but comparing my cousins lycosa that I used for a couple of days, I prefer my G15 with the solid keys and the rubber domes.

Agreed, I was initially underwhelmed by the first MX brown board I touched (Filco) because of how great people make mechanical keyboards out to be. However, after a few days of prolonged use, I found that I started to appreciate it more and more. Today, I am absolutely in love with mechanical switches and cannot use anything else. I suggest that the OP gives his board a chance for a few days before deciding if he wants to return it or not.

Yes I will certainly give it a week or two. Amazon has a 30 day return policy.

I also forgot to mention that I always find myself pushing my left hand a little too far left so that my pinky sits on the Caps lock. Perhaps I am just too used to the layout of my Lycosa.

EDIT: I just pulled out my 3 year old OEM Gateway keyboard that came with my prebuilt for comaprison. My BWU actually feels very similar. o_O?

Yes, that's the word I was going for. Squishy. After typing on this BWU and typing on the Lycosa, it feels squishy.

Yeah, have to agree..just give it a couple more days on it. I hate typing at work on a rubber dome ever since I went mech.

Currently also using a Razor Black Widow Ultimate

the clicky fast response feedback feel of a mechanical keyboard in my opinion really is night and day compared to my old G15 from logitech. Do not think I will be going back to rubber domes any time soon.

Too bad its not PS/2

Oh my goodness it barely takes any effort to push the key down hard enough to register. I haven't even noticed becaues I type with quite some force on my Lycosa.

EDIT: Still can't break 110 wpm on my mechanical :/

I prefer the Logitech g15 or g19 to any mechanical keyboard. My hands actually start to hurt when i use mechanical for an extended period of time.

I dont really like the loose keys on most rubber dome keyboards, but i do actually like them on my cousins g15.
