Well considering the insane number of people addicted to facebook games, I'd say yes

but then, I have to ask. Do you consider those addicted to face book games...gamers? Or just people with nothing better to do at the time?

I wish that this "causual gaming" wasn't even tracked. EA is looking at all the poeple who paid $1.00 for a game on their iPad or iPhone and are thinking they are missing out on huge market.

There is no guarantee with that logic. It makes sense (why wouldn't it?) but just because you have a good product doesn't mean people are willing to buy it. If anything the opposite has been proven true. There are many examples where a product is not that great and by some standards is sub-par.

iPhone/pad and mobile games are overall cheaper which allows you to purchase more for the same amount. To be realistic you don't need a huge team to build a game for a mobile platform. Plus the logic is more often than not simpler so you don't need to use highly skilled developers who request a higher pay rate. And (only making an assumption here) if more people are willing to spend money on mobile games and said games are way cheaper along with a greater ROI, what publisher wouldn't want to focus on the mobile platform.

The games on PC and Consoles can cost millions while a mobile game for a phone can cost only 10's of thousands. For a game like Angry birds, once you get the physics figured out the rest is down hill since the rest of the game is just the reuse of the same assets just positioned in different ways thus development time is very short thus able to get the game out faster and profit off of it in the long run. Mobile games don't suffer the price drop over time syndrome as bad as console games do. With services like steam they do go on sale yes but when purchasing directly from iTunes or from the android market the prices are set by the company and there is no middle man

the guy talks like we are already having photo-realistic graphics. we're far from that. until GPUs can do decent ray-tracing in realtime (nvidia said 2015?) our graphics are far from photorealism.
and look at the stuffs in consoles: 7800 GTX and X1900T. those are quite old.

also he seems to forget that on PC the most popular resolution is 1920x1080.
and the talk about micro-transaction > taking out elements from games and selling them piece by piece is just bs.

"I think there’s going to be an interesting debate when you get to processing power beyond what you can push up with a 1080p or a 720p [system]. Most people squint between 1080p and 720p, because what’s the difference, seriously? I would argue that there’s more to be provided in terms of value for the consumer in micro-transactions and social experiences and driving those better in cross-platform gameplay between a console and a PC and a handheld device and a social network than there is supercharging graphics,"
With this i can safely say that this guy is delusional from poverty and needs to get his eyes checked.

Prob just more hype/build up inferring less console oriented dev/focus for titles... i.e.BF3.

Why? because 'dollar app' games are the fastest growing and highest profit sub section of games development at the moment. Really. Portable gaming is where the money is. And LOL @ 'Angry Birds isn't a real game' etc etc... the 'hardcore gamer' snobbiness is quite LOL tbh. The games industry in general don't care about you guys. As with any industry, they go with wherever they can make the most profit and it definitely ain't you.

The biggest demographic in the games industry is the casual gamer, like it or not.

The 'hardcore gamer' snobbiness exhibited here is LOL. But hey, having my basically future brother-in-law in the games industry has nothing to do with it....

Casual social gaming = WHERE THE $$$$ IS.

Remember, gaming is more than just FPS's and big blockbuster titles with large online multiplayer elements people.

Facebook based games, Flash based games, iPhone / Android based games is where the money is, particularly for small independant companies with small amount of capital.

If you are into graphic design and going to be / are a recent grad, I'd highly recommend you apply for jobs at independent gaming companies that specialise in these 'dollar apps', even if they aren't advertising any jobs.
