I don't think he is saying that. He is saying they very likely know more than you do on the subject because they are experts in their field, and you are probably some dude in spongebob squarepants boxer shorts reading about global warming on the internet lol. They could be wrong about literally everything they have said, but they are still in a much better position than you to determine what is going on.

Its kind of an appeal to authority, but because everyone can't be an expert on the climate, all the general public really has to go on is the consensus of the experts.

It's not an appeal to authority, though. If someone says "I know this stuff, trust me, and this is what I think" that's an appeal to authority. But if someone says "Ok, I'm an expert, but here's my data, and here's my analysis, and here's my reasoning, and here are my predictions that were proven correct - work it out yourself, run your own experiments and simulations, replicate my results" - and hundreds of researchers came to the same conclusion, that's no longer an appeal to authority, that's demonstrated science.

^ SenorBeef (so funny) is right. There are a lot of peeps trying to figure this out from a straight science perspective. I think it's sad when scientists come out with something the people like, they say: "Well of course, it's been like that the entire time". Then they come out with something the people don't like: "Those scientists did something wrong, that can't be how the world works". Yet, the world isn't flat and quantum physics exists.

What even makes me more angry is that some of our top minds are telling us we might want to be a little more conservative. Do you think Bill Gates spent thousands of dollars researching CO2 emissions globally for no reason? Or that he just does speeches about how we need to find better energy sources to lower CO2 emissions because he thinks it is fun?

I'm going into a good hard science field so I don't make stupid accusations like a lot of people, so I can actually push humanity forward and fix these problems. It would be nice to see people actually read articles and get involved instead of blowing it off as hogwash.

[edit] Yeah I read the article, however it's not enough data to say global warming isn't happening. It's just enough data to say we don't know the rate in which it is happening. We do know CO2 emissions were only higher than they are now during one of the per-historic eras, I don't remember which one. Which isn't really a good thing because we have no idea what this much CO2 will do in the atmosphere.

I didn't really mean them. I meant you saying we should listen to the experts was the appeal to authority, but only kind of lol. Ok now I don't know what I meant.

Oh look, a thread about global warming. Time to get my bowl of popcorn and watch people on both sides of the argument throw around claims with no evidence to back them up.

We as humans must think we know everything, and without this urge civilization would not expand.
They are wrong and their scientific models are wrong. They are playing God, and they are predicting things that they have no control over.
Yeah, why would we predict or try to understand things even if we can't control them!?!?!?!

oh wait, that's called SCIENCE:

1. The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.

Studying the earth isn't playing god. The fact that you are suggesting that we shouldn't study things we have no control over is sickening. Why shouldn't we as a race work toward understanding the world and universe around us? Are you proposing that we willfully become ignorant?

no thanks, I'd prefer not to go back to the bronze ages where I'd get burned at the stake for saying the world isn't flat.

They've spent their lives mastering their knowledge and their craft. They have mountains of data available to them, and the scientific method to analyze it with. These people know a billion times more than you do about the subject. And 99% agree that there is global warming and that it's influenced by humanity.

And yet you think I'M FROM THE INTERNET AND I READ TWO PARAGRAPHS ABOUT IT ONCE and you think you know more than the experts. Not only that, but you think the experts are stupid.

Do you carry this over to other topics? Do you like at the plans for a new building and say "all of these architects are wrong and stupid, this building will never stand, I know more about steel and concrete than they do!"? Do you educate your surgeon right before he takes out your appendix because you read something about how using disinfectants during surgery is just a scam from the medical product manufacturers?

You point out simple things like "the climate has changed over the earth's history so there's nothing new here" - do you think they're not aware of that? Do you think the smartest, most knowledgable people we have on the subject have somehow missed this very obvious thing that you know about? Yeah, the climinate on the earth changes over thousands or hundreds of thousands of years. The problem here is that we're looking at it changing over decades. The rate of change is far more dramatic, and our entire civilization revolves around stuff like certain plants growing in certain climates, certain sea levels next to cities, etc.

Do you even understand the basic premise of how this all works? Do you understand that "lol it's cold today, I guess there's no global warming" is a worthless observation? Do you understand why carbon traps heat in the atmosphere? Do you understand why Venus is hotter than Mercury even though Mercury is much closer to the sun?

I mean - you can only either think two things. That these experts on the subject that have dedicated tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of man-hours of research, who go to the arctic to dig up ice cores and launch satellites to exactly map the temperatures on the planet - all of these guys are far more stupid and far less knowledgable than you, some random guy on the internet that read a few paragraphs once, or you have to think that they made it up for no reason and there are just tens of thousands of people in this vast pointless conspiracy and no one has ever blown their cover.

Either way, you're being absurd.
Ah, it's always nice to see someone with a little sense on this forum.

What journal? Sounds like some Art Bell conspiracy journal to me. Gee, I wonder why it wasn't published in a respected journal like Nature or similar...

Dude... my brain blew up after reading that article. It just repeats the same thing over and over... the increase isn't as big as computer models expected it to be... big deal, it's still an increase.

Side note : I'm skeptical about the scale of our impact on global warming.

The earth's geological history is full of proof that the earth freezes and then heats up and cycles like that many times. We are simply going through a heating up cycle. Polar caps are melting because that's what they are supposed to be doing right now.

In the future when the earth starts cooling down and dipping back into a ice age people will be screaming "the end is nigh" again.

Stupid people being stupid.
