[FSB] Ground-based robots swarm to create a landing pad for their quadcopter comrade

We’ve seen many amazing robot demonstrations as of late and it’s time for another. The Georgia Robotics and Intelligent Systems Lab has created a system that has five ground-based robots create a portable landing pad for their quadcopter friend. What’s really cool here is the robots aren’t actually communicating with each other. Rather they take broad orders remotely and independently. The robots know the general location of their robot counterparts and they individually decide what role to take in order to complete their objective. This demonstrates impressive problem solving skills that we may see someday in robotic supply chain systems or human transit. Watch the experiment unfold in the video below.

I see world domination. Definitely military application, probably space exploration too.

Not mindblowing - instead of the leader robot doing all the calculations for each robot's desired position and giving the others simple commands like move to vector, it just gives them all the necessary data and they each do the calculations themselves.

It's a bit like Counter Strike vs WoW. In CS, the server tells the clients which players are hit and when, so they can play the animation. In other words, it does the complex calculations. In WoW, the server just tells the client, for example, the source position of an AoE attack and the radius, and the position and size of visible entities, and then each client calculates which entities in the game world were supposed to be hit by it, and plays the animations for them.

This is almost the obvious way to do things, because the other way (giving them many simple commands per second) would be terribly inefficient.

Still really cool though!

Still the robots could view us as a problem in their way and kill us to solve it.

You are a true overclocker if you thought that 'FSB' in the title meant Front Side Bus
