As for the friend list and in-game chat you can do that with Xfire and even more. And if you really want to use the steam interface, you can still buy your games cheaper at retail and add them to your game list to have the in-game friends list and browser.
When in your extremely hypothetical situation does Steam run off Best Buy, Fry's, Amazon, GameStop and all the other major players to develop this supposed monopoly? 2050?

A coercive monopoly will not let any other competitors exist and tend to price gouge consumers.
Sure, it may not be the best choice for Europeans; but 99 percent of the time; it is the best choice for us Americans.
I hope I explained this clearly. I don't want to sound long winded.
Steam doesn't fit the definition of a monopoly. Natural or otherwise.

I'm getting tired of correcting people so I'm just going to cut and paste.

1. For the millionth time already, Steam HAS competition. Brick and Mortar. Best Buy, Target, Gamestop, Amazon. etc.

2. This is actually the OPPOSITE of competition. If Steam sells your game they want the option to sell your DLC as well. The Devs can still sell it themselves AND they can still offer DLC through other D.D. The issue HERE is that EA is purposely preventing Steam from selling DLC as a means to forcibly break their contract. They want to be the only ones who sell you their DLC. Its perfectly within their right but don't try to call it competition. A market where there is only one seller ( Origin ) selling that 1 product ( DLC ) and having many buyers is the very definition of a monopoly.

Steam is getting too greedy, they want a cut of everything, of course the other publishers will react.

They're getting too greedy b/c they want the option to sell DLC related to the game that they sell? It always amazes me how people perceive things differently.
