if its the retail try a firmware update. I know with the 7200.12...or the .11's there was a firmware update that fixed bricked seagates

YES and NO, mostly NO ... IF your drive already HAS the problems (the OP's does) ... then NO you can't just install the new Firmware, you'll need to REPAIR your drive first, as outlined in the links I provided, and THEN you can update the formware to supposedly keep it from happening again. As I said ... I went through it, so I KNOW, it's a PItA !!! honestly just use it as a paperweight and save yourself the headache.

The OP's drive is already toast, if he just tries to do the firmware upgrade on an already BAD drive, he might as well just throw it in the trash now, because he'd lose any chance at doing a RMA. Though I don't think he will have any luck with that at this stage anyways, because it's most likely an OEM drive that came off an HP/Dell/IBM clone etc thus he can't RMA through Seagate to begin with. But it's up to HIM to check that out using the Drives S/N.
