[CNET] House panel approves broadened ISP snooping bill

Quote:
Internet providers would be forced to keep logs of their customers' activities for one year--in case police want to review them in the future--under legislation that a U.S. House of Representatives committee approved today.
Quote:
To make it politically difficult to oppose, proponents of the data retention requirements dubbed the bill the Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act of 2011, even though the mandatory logs would be accessible to police investigating any crime and perhaps attorneys litigating civil disputes in divorce, insurance fraud, and other cases as well. "The bill is mislabeled,".. This is not protecting children from Internet pornography. It's creating a database for everybody in this country for a lot of other purposes."

Welp, it's only a matter of time before it reaches the floor.

Still illegal, the more you tighten your grasp, the more that will turn to the pirates and hackers, and create their own "ORGANIZED" not rogue, societies.

I'm not sure how the quote goes but it was something like this:

"First they came for the infirm, disabled, and crazy. And I didn't care."
"Then they came for the gypsies and Jews. And I didn't care."
"Then they came for me. And no one else cared."

This is a very slippery slope in terms of who gets a hold of your records.

PS: China has something just like this and everyone here thinks it's a terrible thing. So, is it because the US is making one for their citizens therefore it isn't as bad? I know it probably won't lead to the government/police knocking down my door in the middle of the night for saying whichever puppet/party is in power is a bunch of idiots/figure heads. But, I rather not have something that can be used to do such a thing exist in the first place.

Also, I must applaud the businesses (RIAA exct.) that paid under the table to the political parties to get this going under such a righteous name. The mindless masses will be easily convinced it's for the greater good and go about their days like nothing changed. They wouldn't notice it until too late.

This bill symbolizes everything wrong with our government today. Hopefully people will wake up to this stuff and actually get out and get their voices heard and more importantly make their votes matter.

>implying they weren't already logging everything for datamining purposes.

Google hands over data by request thousands of times a year.

In general there is no assumption of privacy online, its like shouting to a friend across a crowded room.
