GTX580 SLI - Power Supply? / Brand?

Dear OCN,

After much thought I feel like its time to go for Nvidia again ... So my plan is to upgrade my current system (signature) with 2x GTX580 cards so it will be ready for the many new games this fall.

I already understand I will need to upgrade my Power Supply, 1 reason being that the current one won't support 2x GTX580's due to the lack of 2x 8pins PCI-e connectors. Can you guys suggest me a decent PSU to have enough juice for 2x 580's and the rest of my system?

Also, my first pick for the cards would go to the Asus DirectCU II cards. I don't game in high resolutions or multi-monitor setups ... maximum resolution of 1080P ... so 3GB models aren't necessary I presume?

Any popular brand/model 850w would be more than enough (with plenty of room for OCing).

Corsair 850TX or HX, there's also the new modular TXs that just came out
OCZ ZX 850W
Silverstone strider plus (or Strider Gold) 850W
Sentey Golden Steel Power 850W
NZXT Hale 850W

All of those (minus the TX) are at least partially modular AFAIK and generally excellent units. As far as recommendations go I'd go for something from Corsair just for their service and warranty, which seems to be top notch.

Never had any problems with Corsair hardware before, and they are easily available around here. If 850 is enough then I can have em delivered by next week which is great

The Asus DirectCu II cards are fine as well I presume? Haven't heard anything bad about them, just that they have 1.5GB while there are 3GB models as well.

If I read correctly your psu has two 6pin and two 8pin connectors.

Or am I looking at the wrong unit http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/artic...y-Review/555/9

no you're correct, but a GTX580 requires 2x 8pin connectors instead of my current card which needs a 6- and 8-ping connector. If I want to SLI the GTX580 I will need 4x 8-pin connectors

HX950 or HX1000 should be plenty.

^^^Old and really over hyped.

As mentioned before a quality 850w should do you fine. I recommend the HX850 or AX850, there are quite a few others too. good luck

Well yes, but the HX850 didn't have 4x 8-pin right? I agree the HX1000 is old though but I couldn't think of another unit unfortunately
