i5 2500K High Temps? Return?

Thread Starter
I just put together a new build for a friend and I'm noticing some high temperatures on idle and load. Idle 45C-50C. Load 75-80C. In the UEFI bios, the temps are around 60C. Could this a CPU problem or something else?

I've reseated the heat sink twice now and used a pea sized drop of MX-2 in the middle each time. I've also checked the heat sink clips and they are locked in the holes securely. The heat sink is stuck on and does not wiggle. The motherboard has the latest BIOS that isn't beta.

I'm running an i3 2100 right now that is running 5-10C cooler on stock cooling so I'm kinda concerned.

i5 2500K w/ Stock Heatsink + MX-2 Thermal Paste
P8Z68-V
8GB Corsair Vengeance
Powercooler 6950 1GB
Fractal Design Arc Midi w/ 3 Fans
Corsair AX850

What do you guys think? Is this a CPU problem or something else on my end? I'm sure I'm still within the return window at Microcenter

Well, before we dig too far what is your ambient?

The stock Intel hsf isn't exactly a monster.

Also is he running discrete gfx or SB gfx?

get a better heatsink ASAP. You went for the 2500k to OC right? then get rid of the stock heatsink

Ambiet is probably in the 70-80s. It's pretty cool right now in SoCal

Voltage should be Auto

The computer is off now though. I'm currently using my i3 2100 computer which is idling around 35-40C and will not go past 60C on full load on stock cooling

I am using stock cooking for now and will get a H100 in a couple of weeks. Oh and the computer is being built for a friend.

Coming off a fresh install of Windows 7. Installed all the drivers and downloaded the latest tools from their webpage

Forgot to mention that I'm using a Radeon 6950 1GB. Not the integrated HD 2000

It's a little higher than normal, but this has happened to SO MANY people with the i5-2500k (not sure about 2600k but I think so too). Google it and see just how many people seem to get these temps on install.

The stock intel cooler's mechanical design is targeted towards CPUs that use less power (which is evident indirectly via looking up their TDP). As far as I'm aware it hasn't changed recently in design so its not going to give you temps that you're used to seeing.

Why do I see a CPU fan RPM of 1200? With stock cooler, it should be 2000, always.... change that in BIOS please.

For me, I got into Windows and had temps ~46 on the hottest core, 38-39 for the other cores. Prime hit 80. I reseated with Arctic silver and that dropped 3C at idle, 10C in Prime95 (or maybe more... I think I went from 85 to low 70s)..... but it took time to break in the thermal paste. If you really want to be sure, give it a week or so and cycle it through different loads so it can heat up for a bit, then cool down for a bit.

I would highly recommend the Hyper 212+. It's $30 and wow does it deliver. You won't be worrying about temps anymore, at all... (unless you want to OC to 5.0Ghz lol).

So these temps wouldn't justify a return/exchange?

I will up the FAN speeds later. I'm going to reseat it one more time and try using AS5 instead of the MX-2 to see if it makes any difference.

The stock cooler is only temporarily as since my friend will be getting an H100 in a couple of weeks.

Any other recommendations?
