460 vs 465

Thread Starter
So I'm just curious if this price difference is worth it (not looking to buy these but just curious)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130566

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814162052

So I would definitely choose EVGA over Galaxy, but the 465 being slightly better and $20 less, Would that be the better option? maybe you could unlock it to a 470???

Yes the 465 is the better option and they can be unlocked,460s cant, and have more performance.

Well the 460 uses less power and is less hot. And apperently OCs farther. But the 465 is a little bit better than it out of the box. You could try to unlock it but your chances are low. If you were going to get one i'd get the $100 refurbished PNY card and hope it has black PCB then you'd have a high chance to get a unlock to a GTX 470

The 465 isn't better than the 460 unless it unlocks. Locked, the 460 edges it in performance with a lower TDP.

Yeah, geez I didn't realize the TDP was so much higher on the 465

Galaxy won't unlock.

465's however fold better than 460's.

GTX 465s are beefier GPUs. The chip has more fixed function hardware than the GTX 460 chips. The GTX 460 is a lot more silent, cool and efficient though.

For gaming I'd choose a GTX 460, but it has to be said that the GTX 465 is the better chip (with better tesselation and AA performance).
460 = Cooler, quieter, lower TDP, faster out of box due to higher clocks
465 = Cheaper, faster CFC, better folder, better at tessellation

At max OC's, they're practically identical, perf-wise, but the 460 will be much cooler/quieter.

It's unlikely you'd ever 'see' a difference in the gaming experience whichever you chose, there's just not enough perf difference.

But the 460 is the better card overall due to power efficiency superiority and all that entails. How much more it's worth is dependent on how much you value that aspect. Personally I'd pay up to $30 extra for a 460, beyond that, I'd choose the 465.

The Galaxy 465 is a nice card, at an amazing price on the Egg right now, but does NOT unlock. No Blue PCB 465's can unlock.

465's are the most epic fail of gpu's..ever. theyre marginally better than 460s and are way hotter and draw more power. the only way a 465 would be wroth it is if it unlocks. which everything on the market nowadays dosent..except for msi's 100% unlock rate golden edition and pny's black pcb..those are the only 2 i know of

When the 460's came out at the same price, the 465 became a fail. But when they're significantly cheaper than a 460 (as they are now), they look a lot more attractive to a gamer on a budget than they did originally.

The 5830 was a pretty epic fail card, too, with all the same issues (overpriced, high TDP vs. performance, etc) and that's what the 465 was rushed to market to combat.

Also, a bunch of people have gotten unlockable EVGA 465 SC's off of newegg, as recently as a couple weeks ago I was helping someone unlock theirs.
