A8-3850 GPU vs Radeon 3870 CF

Thread Starter
Ok, so I know how this is going to turn out, but want some other opinions.

I have 2 Radeon 3870s in Crossfire Mode in my current setup. I'm looking at upgrading to the new A8-3850 CPU that has the Radeon 6550D GPU embedded within it.

Do I want to put in my two 3870s in the new build?

Would they even be compatible?

Which GPU would be the more powerful one?
Your 3870s would probably be faster, but why not just get something like a GTX 460 or 6850?.. They aren't that expensive and will be much faster than your 3870 CF.

Yeah, keep your current CPU and just buy a newer GPU instead.

Thx for the ideas guys. I have to do this piecemeal, because I dont have all the $$ up front. Just trying to judge if putting the 3870s in the PC initially would be worth it until I can get myself a 6850, 6870 or 6890.

Put the 3870's in the PC man. I don't get why People are trying to get the newest stuff when they could wait until they NEED it.

3870's are still an ok card. My 4870 1GB is still a Good card.

Interesting..... OK card vs GOOD card...

Overall, my current setup is about 4 years old (give or take a little bit) and is starting to show its age. Win 7 runs decently on it, but I'm ready for something newer. Plus, I want to get rid of my BIOS system and utilize the UEFI...

Don't get me wrong, I love my 3870s!! They still rock out most games with minimal issues. I just didn't want to get the A8 and end up having a GPU that can't pull its weight when compared to my 3870s (which I think would be the case).

the xfire 3870 will be better no question. The integrated might be on par with a single 3870 at best.

However, if you buy a 6670 it will crossfire with the integrated graphics on the a8. I hear the xfire scales really well in this scenario and will double the fps or more. 58 fps in dirt 3 on high with 4xaa http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-...view?artc_pg=3

If you are looking for a gaming machine then I would not go with the a8. It's like a low power budget chip, its only faster because its the new 32nm generation. Bulldozer is 32nm also and will be out in september. Just buy a 990x mobo and some ddr3 and use the athlon until bulldozer drops. Get a 6870 or a refurb 6950 when you want more gfx.

Its a 6570 and not a 6550, but you get the point:

That's not an upgrade. The CPU you have is pretty much the same thing as the A8-3850 so you won't be getting more processing power, and the integrated GPU would be slower, one would think then 2 3870s.

Edit - Looks like 2 3870s is around a 4870/5770. So it'll work until you can get something better. If you're fine with it for now, might as well just save up for a nice next generation GPU. An Athlon II x4 at 3.5 will be ok for awhile in games.

the 6550 is a slow onboard gpu. It can only handle games at 1024x768 resolution.

I suggest keeping your athlon x4 640, sell the cf 3870 and get a gtx 560 or hd6870.
That way you get dx11 and save electricity.
