Questionable H50 performance

Thread Starter
Dear OCN,

I recently changed over all of my equipment to a new motherboard after only having had my H50 installed for a week. While running ITB/Prime95 I was seeing max temperatures of 62/63 and idling around 36, and that was during overclocking attempts around 3.8-4ghz.

Now that I've moved motherboards I'm unable to boot into Windows due to another unrelated issue, but I'm noticing that the CPU temperature listed in my BIOS is 49-52 degrees at idle, and that's at stock settings!

When I moved the H50 I cleaned off the processor completely with my girlfriend's sock (soft cloth) and coated the H50 with a fresh layer of thermal paste. I didn't let it dry, though, and just put it right on the CPU. Was this the incorrect step to take?

I'm running on the stock corsair fan that came with the H50, pushing air on the radiator, though I don't feel any airflow on it at all and the water pipes feel noticeably warm to the touch. I have the fan on the motherboard's CPU Fan plug and the pump is... I believe its plugged into my fan controller, manually set to the full blast of 1400rpm. Any thoughts on what is heating up my system?

BIOS is not idle. Windows idle is much colder.

Also, thermal paste is not supposed to be dry before application. If it's dry, it won't fill gaps between CPU and heatsink.

Hopefully that explains it. Do you suppose it's active enough to jack us up to those temperatures?

Yes. CnQ isn't active in BIOS AFAIK, so it's running at max frequency (if you're OC'd, about 4 GHz).

Sounds like a bad mount to me which is very easy with an h-50, so glad I got rid of mine, silver arrow came in the mail yesterday,h-50 will live in a box in the basement not even worth selling probably give a friend a free upgrade from stock cooling or something.

Listen, we've had these topics a couple of times before and trust me, you can't determine idle temps from the BIOS. Wait for Windows, it'd be a waste of time to try troubleshooting if it indeed just is the BIOS that causes the temps. 50 C isn't a killer anyway, so no harm done if it actually is a bad mount.

Also, you can change your title if you go to advanced editing.

EDIT: Oh and this:

Didn't catch that one, but very true. The size of a rice or a pea. Less is more when talking thermal paste.

Don't coat the H50. Just put a small dot of compound on the CPU and let the pressure spread it.

Also, adding another fan to the cooler for a push/pull configuration would probably help as well.

Roget that. If the temps still look lousy after I get the booting issue sorted I'll clean them off and apply the dab to the cpu and let it spread. Thanks all.
