Ultimate Freeware List - Page 17

I'd like to submit Open Hardware Monitor as a great open source freeware that belongs on the System Monitoring list.

http://openhardwaremonitor.org/ is the parent site link.

http://openhardwaremonitor.org/downloads/ is the download link.

The latest version is 0.3.2 beta and it allows you to do everything that CPUID Hardware Monitor Pro (the paid version) does in terms of renaming sensors and customizing what sensors you want to show or hide. Furthermore, it adds the capability of a "gadget" that doesn't even require you to have the gadet service in windows installed to use. It also allows for graphical plotting and logging of sensor data, supports a min/max record, allows for run on windows startup and start minimized, and the sensors can be individually selected for the gadget, which has an adjustable font size. It will display in C or °F and it will even montior HDD temperature if your drive is S.M.A.R.T. capable and S.M.A.R.T. is enabled in your BIOS.

I've verified the accuracy of the sensors with GPU-Z, CPU-Z, Real Temp, and Hardware Monitor (the freeware version that you can't rename sensors on) and it's accurate.

Here's a screenshot of the gadget at work while folding.

I'd like to add COMODO as a freeware firewall that is surprisingly powerful.

http://www.comodo.com/home/download/download.php?prod=firewall  is the download link.

http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/firewall.php explains the features of the program.

http://www.comodo.com/ is the parent website.

And I'd like to recommend Mini Tool Partition Wizard in the Partition Manager section. I've used it and I can attest to it being an excellent product.

http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html  is the download link.

http://www.minitool.ca/ is the parent company, (Canadians!) and they also have partition recovery, drive wiper, and drive copy software too, but I haven't used those freeware products so I can't attest to their performance.

Again, I haven't used those three because I haven't had a need to yet, but I'm throwing them out there.

Drive Copy: http://www.minitool-drivecopy.com/download.html

Drive Wipe: http://www.minitool-drivewipe.com/download.html

Partition Recovery: http://www.minitool-partitionrecovery.com/download.html

For the Office Suite section I'd like to add Libre Office. Libre Office is from the same folks that were originally responsible for Open Office, and they've improved on Open Office. I use Libre Office currently and I find it to be every bit as familiar as the MS paid products it competes with and faster than Open Office.

http://www.libreoffice.org/download/ is the download page.

http://www.libreoffice.org/ is the parent page.

The next two submissions are really Firefox add-ons but they both function as popup blockers (and then some). With the two combined, you have an incredibly safe and private browsing environment inside of Firefox.

And for Popup Blockers or General Software that work great, I'll mention Adblock Plus. It is a Firefox add-on that also works in Thunderbird, K-Melon, and Prism. You can get it from the Firefox add-on page or you can get it at their download link:

http://adblockplus.org/en/

Another Popup Blocker / General Software that is a Firefox add-on is NoScript, which allows you total control over what JavaScript, Java, and Flash applications are allowed to run inside of your browser.

I'd like to add Explorer++ to the list. All the current file explorers in OP are extremely dated, while this has been updated in the past month. http://www.explorerplusplus.com/

Here are some free programs that I didn't see on the list
Cad
OpenSCAD http://www.openscad.org/
It's a scripted cad, which means you basically write a program that in reads to generate 3D shapes. The built in text editor isn't all that great but you can open the file in any text editor you want and set Openscad to auto refresh and every time you save the file in the other program it creates it. It's used a lot with creating .stls for 3D printing.

FreeCAD http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/free-cad/index.php?title=Main_Page
FreeCAD is an opensource cad program that works for Windows, Linux, or OS X. There are multiple ways to use it, you can use it like a traditional cad program or you can script parts in python. I haven't gotten around to using this all that much but it seems like a well rounded program and looks to be getting new features soon.

Video Tools
Handbrake http://handbrake.fr/
This is great for any video encoding. It can rip from a dvd, a disc image, or any movie file I've ever thrown at it. It's has a ton of options so your movies come out they way you want them, though there are also quite a few presets that should cover most of your needs. You can que up multiple files and let it go to work over night or while you are at work. All around it's a great program.

superb player !!

Awesome name biggrin.gif

To the OP:
1. I've read a bunch of people like Media Monkey. Just putting that out there for the audio players. I don't remember if it's free or not, though... redface.gif
2. What would be the best audio player to get if all I wanted to do was just listen to music? I watch movies, as well, but on VLC. Is VLC what I should use all around? tongue.gif

Thanks biggrin.gif

The scanned image will probably be in the form of JPG or PNG (or other image format, which I think you should be able to specify in your settings before you scan).
After getting the image, convert it using a free converter software, such as the one here http://www.jpgtopdfconverter.com/.

Note: I haven't used this software myself but I suppose it will work. thumb.gif

Sweet, sounds good. That's one extra step, but it will definitely work for now!

If anyone knows of a single program that can do it all, that would be awesome:p

VLC for audio player.
Microsoft security essentials for antivirus.

Why is OpenOffice still in this list? Surely LibreOffice would be a better choice given that it's genuinely free and open source, unlike OOO.

Couldn't see MPC-HC64 either. Use LAV filters and get H10P compatibility too.
