480 SLI vs. 560TI SLI vs. 580

Thread Starter
So I'm building my first PC ever, and I want to make it future proof with a budget of 1800$ and no future upgrades. I'm planing also on going 3D with an ACER GD235, still wondering between I5 2500K or 2600K 'cause HT maybe be needed for 6 cores games later.. Well down to the question I read that 3D gaming cuts your fps in half, and I was going to buy the GTX 570 but it doesn't seem to handle games like Metro on high 3D resolutions, so what of the GPU configurations would be better for me?? I'm open to new sugestions as well:)
I would save the money and go with the 2500k, no games currently use HT, and they probably won't any time soon.
The SLI 560 will perform better then a 580 in games that support SLI and use it well. In games with bad optimization, the 580 will win.

Hi smile.gif

This post might give you an idea what sort of GPU power you'll need smile.gif

I don't plan on future upgrades so sli seems to be my way to go right? but the 480 SLI and 560TI seems so close, wich one will be better? I plan on getting an 850w PSU, so in terms of power consumption and mostly((( FUTURE PROOFING)))) and size, wich will win? also GTX 570 SLI maaybe an option too
post #5 of 35
i have SLI 480's and my buddy has SLI 580's. i will say without a doubt unless you care about benchmarking scores, you will be able to max out every game with SLI 480's. i have run Shift2 at 48x AA/AF (forced in the nvidia control panel) at above 55fps. You could then distribute the saved money to a SSD or a higher tier cpu (id take the ssd though, dramatic speed difference over traditional hard drives).

also, test out 3d before you buy it. if you think its going to be like Imax, your wrong. the local LAN Party admin won Section 8's grand prize giveaway of a full 3d setup and we got to play with it at the last LAN, and almost everyone was disappointed for gaming. Movies look ok, but it feels like theres a huge shimmer effect to everything.

get the 580. Because in the future you can just slap another one on their if you want to. a good quality 850W PSU will handle the SLI 580s no problem.

Something like this

I'd go with 560ti's for SLI over the 480s. They made some minor improvements with the 500 series.

If you jump up to the 570...I'd just get one for now and do the SLI thing later. Same thing for the 580 of course. One 570 will do very well...nothing handles Metro at max setting yet besides some extreme SLI or Crossfire configs. Then you can let the price simmer down a bit and just when the one card can't handle everything you want it to you can jump onto the SLI boat. (even if they stop making the cards you will be able to get a used one...and save even more and get one that has been well tested)

go with the 5xx series, better power vs performance.

the one thing i can say about the 480's are they get HOT. but the 580's also get hot. hot as in it heated the heatsink on one of my friends vapercooled and warped it, which caused the heatsink to almost dislodge from the card... talk about some heat!
