Looking to build a silent high end water cooled gaming system

Thread Starter
I'd like to build a 10db or less water cooled gaming rig and am looking for advice. I've never built a water cooled system before.

First, is there a commercial available pump system that produces 10db or less of sound? I assume it would have to be submerged in the reservoir and be surrounded by a sound dampening case. For reference, if you are 3 feet away from 10db, you should not be able to tell if it's on or off, even if your life depends on it.

The water system will need to cool the CPU, GPU (probably a single Radeon 5850), Northbridge, and possibly the power supply (it dissipates heat entirely via the casing). The case will be fanless and open air. The lack of forced air probably means I can't overclock the ram much if at all.

Anyone have suggestions on a water pump or system that could do this? If there isn't a way to get a dead silent pump then I'm not going to build the system.

Edit- This computer is in a sound studio, a "really quiet" fan doesn't work.

first of all, you don't have the choice, you need fans for a watercooling Radiator

I have two MCP 655's pumps in my system and can barely hear them at full speed if I turn off all fans for a couple of second.

If you want a low noise system, get a fan controller to connect your fand on it so you can choose the speed depending on your CPU Load and GPU Load.

If you want to use Low speed fans, get a XSPC RX360 Radiator, your best bet in my opinion or maybe a HW Labs Black Ice SR-1 360 ( see skinnee labs chart below for radiator/fans performance)

No need to cool the power supply, cool the motherboard instead

You don't need fans- stop repeating this vicious slander.

My current system (in signature) runs a 5850 gpu, i7 920 @3ghz, and has no fans. I disabled the power supply fan and the rig has been stable for over a year now.

It has a custom heat sync on the northbridge, and best passive heat syncs money could buy for gpu and cpu in early 2010 (they were both around $70), with copper wiring connecting the cpu and gpu heat syncs to the aluminum case. In a 24 degree C room, temps peak (24hrs full load) at:
Computer case:43 degrees C
NB: 64 C
CPU: 53 C
GPU: 60 C

I'd like to know if it is possible to get similar performance from a water cooled system as I'd like to be able to overclock my processor more.

Yep, noise is needed, but it can be reduced. Bigger fans, push more CFM with less noise. Also, noiseblocker makes some super qiet fans. SSD's will cut out Disk drive noise and low rpm HDDs are cheaper and quieter. FrozenCPU sells some sound dampening supplies http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l1/g7/Sound_Dampening.html
Never mount fans directly to anything, always use a gasket. Get the GTS radiators because they preform better with low RPM fans.
Also get a bay fan controller and temp display... so you can be quiet during normal use, but can turn the fans up as the computer begins to overheat

Maybe on Air, but I never heard of a watercooling system without a fan, unless your Radiator is outside the house during cold winter or if the radiator is next to an Air conditionner

Totally Useless, they don't create heat that much anyway

Some power supplies turn the fan off when it isn't needed.

You can also just get really quiet fans..

Alphacool does make passive radiators but they are made of aluminum. Straight distilled water won't work with these. http://www.aquatuning.us/index.php/cPath/25_93
