Yeah, bay fan controllers + bay temp display and you could keep it as quiet as possible during normal use and turn it up if need be.

Just get a waterchiller in another room, or mount radiators in a another room.

Does it really need to be in the same box?

PS Noise Blockers perform pretty good for low noise levels.

I'm startled by how lacking water cooling equipment reviews are. I don't believe this is a single published db reading for the Zalman Reserator, or other high end water systems. I thought less noise was supposed to be one of the selling points of water cooling?

I've thought about having the pump in a different room, but for my setup it wouldn't be practical

I'm debating putting the pump in a plywood & fiberglass sound proof box with water cables running through a couple baffles. It would need to be a pretty high powered pump for that.

Main Purpose of watercooling is not the absence of sound, it's its COOLING performance

The Zalman has a fan, and it's aluminum... it's also a waste of money - stay away.

Your options are a large passive radiator, a geo-thermal cooling system, putting your fans/rad/pump in a seperate room (possibly in the wall or under the flooring), stick to your current set up.

10db is less than the sound of you breathing. 20 to 25db is doable with WC'ing, and it's pretty danred silent.

Edit: With a D5 pump with the isolation foam and set to say the fourth speed, you're not hitting much more than 25 Dba. Good fans that push air on a rad range from the 19-28 Dba. With this in the case you can probably hear about 15 from 1 meter away. Just an AC or a radio in the room and you can't hear anything. Add to that any music or gaming sounds and the computer becomes silent. You can get even better sound out of fans and rads if you cut out any honeycomb grills on the case and build fan shrouds to give a little bit of distance between the fan and the rad. Then you need an SSD because an HDD is going to produce sound also. You can also get insulation foam you put on the inside of your case to further reduce noise. But I'm pretty sure you can't hit 10Dba.

Submersion would be your best bet. I doubt 10dBA is gonna happen with standard water cooling.

I had two 4850s running passively on a mcr320 radiator mounted in the top of my case. Temperatures under sustained load were far lower than on stock coolers. You still have pump noise, but with the right pump it is negligible. Power supplies produce very little sound, and contribute to overall cooling in a closed case, so I wouldn't attempt to water cool one.
If I were to build a nearly silent water cooled setup, I would use and excessive number of low fin per inch radiators (swiftech mcr series is a good price / performance ratio), a variable speed pump, and very low speed fans. To reduce sound you will have to reduce airflow inside the case, and consequently parts that would otherwise be easily cooled will get hot. Keep an eye on motherboard parts: VRM coolers, chipset, etc. may have heat issues.

Fractal design makes some 600 rpm and 39 cfm 140mm fans that are rated at about 9 Db so I'd look for those.
