Deep black color

Thread Starter
I just bought a new monitor, this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...&Tpk=S231HLbid

I have noticed it doesn't have a deep black color. Like for example my wallpaper, my old monitor will show a deeper black color than this one. Is there a way to get to fix this or is it just because the monitor doesn't have a good color quality? Thanks, I don't know much about displays.

it sounds like it just doesn't have as good of color, but assuming you haven't messed with any settings, that's just a guess. What was your old monitor for comparison? Is it the LG you have listed in your signature? I'm not personally sure which is capable of what in the color department, but given the price, that's probably a TN panel. Those aren't known for colors, and LCDs on the whole are a mixed bag on color, especially with Black levels, especially on the budget panels.

I have tried tinkering with the settings though I don't really know what I was doing. All the setting it has are brightness, contrast, and colour temp. Yes, the LG I have is the one on my sig.

it's an LED backlit TN panel... do you expect good color reproduction?

TN panels are a type of LCD, and of the types, color is one of the areas they are poorest on average. That being said, I think your current (or now previous) monitor is a TN panel as well. However, not all TN panels are created equal. Some may be relatively good with colors, and some may be poorer. My guess would be that your old monitor was possibly more decent with colors, but it's just a guess. I have no firsthand experience/knowledge with either one.

TN panel = the most common, and the most cheapest LCD technology used currently. It is in about 95% of LCD displays. The upsides of it is that it is cheap to manufacture and it has a fast pixel responsiveness (though competitors have now caught up to it in that area, pretty much if we compare averages), but the cons are that it is quite bad at producing accurate colors, and it has poor viewing angles.

The main competitor these days is IPS, a technology that is more expensive to produce, a fraction slower, but not much, but produces amazing colors and has very good viewing angles (no color shift on most panels when viewing from any angle)

Non black blacks are to be expected of LCD monitors, especially TN monitors. It's nothing to exactly worry about. If it really bothered, I would try lowering the screen brightness, which usually controls the backlight, and see if it would work that way.
