[Solved] Purchased a domain to point to my server - shows IP in address bar

post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
Hey peeps, I was hoping to get some help with a problem I'm having.

All problems solved

New issue:

Unfortunately it now shows my IP address in the address bar upon visiting my .com domain.

Previous issue:

I'm currently working in a small team developing a Facebook application as a final year Uni project. To get my team started I setup a server in my own home for development use.

I have a static IP and a properly configured web server. In order to get our web app up on Facebook, we needed a domain name. I asked my boss to go ahead and purchase a domain name and point it to my IP address. He registered it at www.mydomain.com and set it up with an "A" Record to point to my IP.

After a few hours, my website was accessible from the new domain name "example.com".

Here is the problem:

Code:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Frameset//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/frameset.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<title>Under construction</title>
<META NAME="Keywords" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="Description" CONTENT="">
</head>
<frameset frameborder="0" framespacing="0" border="0" rows="100%,*">
    <frame name="MYTOPFRAME" src="http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xx" noresize>
    <noframes>
       <body>
           <h1>Under construction</h1>
           <br>
   <br>
   <br>
   Click here to enter <a href="http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xx">http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xx</a>
           <hr>
| Domain Name Registration and Domain Name Forwarding by <a href="http://www.mydomain.com">mydomain.com - Register your domain name</a>
        </body>
    </noframes>
</frameset>
</html>
That is the source code when visiting example.com. It is loading the contents of my website inside a frame on a web page that is likely being hosted by the folks at mydomain.com. The reason this is a problem is because Facebook does not allow redirection to any domain other than the one that the app is configured for, and when a user tries to authenticate with my app, Facebook tries to redirect to my ip (xxx.xxx.xxx.xx) instead of my domain (example.com), which is not allowed.

I've been doing some research into the problem obviously and i am lead to believe that my boss must have set to mask (or cloak) the URL when he set up the domain.

Quote:
Cloaking is a special kind of WebForward. Just like a WebForward, cloaking creates a hidden "A" record pointing to our web server. However, when our web server gets a request for your site from a visitor, not only does our web server forward the visitor to the URL of your choosing, but an invisible frame is used to hide the destination URL. Your domain name stays in the location bar of your visitor's browser, thus "cloaking" the destination URL.
Is that it or is something else going on here? How can I make my domain name point to my IP and actually load my web page rather than load it inside a frame on someone else's site? Will unmasking the url still show example.com in a users url bar, or will example.com just redirect to my ip and show my ip in their bar?

I know one solution is to get dedicated hosting, transfer my domain name to the new host and that would fix the issue, but we are not ready to do that and would like to absolutely avoid this if possible.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Regards, Suit Up (or just Phill )

I would call them up, if you purchased that domain you are entitled to a fully functional A record rather than a cloaked page with advertisements on it.

I used 1&1 for my domain, they are pretty good and at the time they had the lowest rates ($5 a year). Don't know if this is still the case.

Edit. Just read the second part about your boss changing it, never mind my last post.

What's happening is definitely cloaking, you just need to get into the settings for the domain and change it to DNS rather than a redirect.

Thanks (+rep), I hope it is just a cloaked redirect. I'll ask him to take a look and see if he checked any options for cloaking or masking, as I unfortunately cannot do it myself.

I should hear back from him within the next few hours.

In the meantime, I'm open to any other ideas/suggestions.

Boss got back to me.

He said:
Quote:
I just checked, it was on stealth forwarding, it has been changed to standard forwarding ... hopefully this helps.
Now when I visit my domain it is now properly loading my site without any nasty framesets.

Unfortunately it now shows my IP address in the address bar upon visiting my .com domain.

Is there another setting my boss needs to mess with to fix that? In case you need to know, he added ns1.mydomain.com, ns2.mydomain.com, ns3.mydomain.com and ns4.mydomain.com as the nameservers.

He needs to add an A record and nothing else. He's doing other things.

Thanks for the input (+rep).

I've asked him to take some screenshot's of the various settings available to him on the site. Hopefully I might spot something out of the ordinary. I would just do it myself but I'm not about to ask my boss for his login details, lol.

Boss gave me the details, got in and had a look around. He had URL forwarding set up rather than binding an A record to my IP. I made the change but it hasn't fixed it yet.

I'm guessing it could take a few hours/days to update. Any idea how long an A bind might take to take effect?

Thanks.

Just letting you all know that all problems are now solved. It was a matter of disabling url forwarding and setting up A record binding. I then waited a couple of hours for the DNS to update and now everything is golden.

The problem arose because the person who initially set the domain name up didnt do what i asked
Oh well, only lost 3 days on this
