cleaning video cards??

Thread Starter
I was wondering if there was any way to "wipe" the dust off of my cards. I can use air to clean them to an extent, but you still build a slight layer of dust that air can't seem to clean off. for example the fans and the back of the cards. The fans i can wipe with a cloth maybe, but what about the card itself? just thought i'd see how you guys do it.

Cotton ball, dipped in alcohol. Takes awhile but works great.

Q-tips and alcohol, cheap and effective.

I just rinse my cards with tap water, and use my blower to blast all the water off, then wipe them down with a towel and let them sit for half a day in a warm, dry, place (or use a hair dryer for 20 minutes if I'm in a hurry).

These things are made of fiberglass and metal, not cotton candy and toilet paper.

^This, rinsing them with tap water is a bad idea. Lots of minerals and such in tap water that won't evaporate and could cause your video card to short.

A final rinse in distilled is preferable, but rarely necessary.

Most new hardware is covered with more crap than you would add to the card with even hard well-water. In the last decade or so, manufacturers have really cheaped out on their PCB washing process and rarely do I get a motherboard or video card that isn't covered with a layer of flux and other scum out of the box.

I've never had an issue with a short after rinsing with tap water only and thoroughly drying the card.
