480 SLI vs single 580

Thread Starter
I'm going to be doing a new build here in the next week or so (if everything goes according to plan) and I'm kind of torn between GTX 480 SLI and a single GTX 580 with the option to SLI down the road. I have one 480 already that I got brand new from a guy on craigslist for $200 (great deal tbh) and EVGA is selling b-stock 480s for $220 right now.

The only problem is I have a 750W power supply, so that is more than likely going to need to be upgraded in order to power the 480s. This puts me at roughly $400 (going for NZXT Hale90 1000W to match my NZXT Phantom ) in upgrades to get my second 480 in SLI, or $500 if I have to buy a new 480.

I feel like the 580 option is silly because I'll pay around the same amount (maybe a bit more on the 480 side) and get far less performance. As far as I've been able to tell, 480 vs 580 is roughly 10-15% difference at most anyway. I'm just having trouble justifying the extra costs. Halp?

I'd take the sli 480s personally. You should fill out the rest of your system in user cp at the top of your page.

GTX480 SLI is way faster than a single GTX580. If you actually look at the numbers, GTX580 is only about 10% to 15% faster than its little brother. I upgraded to a GTX580 and couldn't tell a difference without a bench or something telling me that it IS faster. Also, a 750w is enough for 2 480gtx if it's a decent model. I ran a GTX480 off of a HX520 psu.

750W powering SLI 480s? Damn, you sure? That would be amazing lol, it would definitely make me more inclined towards 480s. I have a Thermaltake TR2 RX 750W Bronze. Not sure about the quality yet, I've barely been able to test it (no system atm)

How about dual GTX 560 Ti?
Faster than a single GTX 580 and more efficient than two GTX 480s.

Over time the 480 SLI will probably cost you more...

When you consider power usage and value..

480 SLI is still stronger.

Power consumption is not a strong concern of mine, as long as I have enough juice. I pretty much only have my PC turned on when I'm gaming anyway. Other times I just use my laptop.

I honestly feel like I'd probably wind up spending the same amount of money in the long run and get less performance than two 480s. Plus I'd have to go through the trouble of finding someone to trade me a 560 Ti for my 480. :x
