i'm already at gtx 470's sli,

contemplating on just adding another gtx 470 for ($160)

or changing it up and going cf 6950's for ($500)

or gtx 570's (550-600$ or whatever marketplace value for a used pair)

i've seen some benches with tri sli- but i'm not sure if there are any benchmarks comparing 3xprev gen, versus 2x current gen,

anyone have a suggestion?

I have abstracted some numbers from guru3d's reviews:- (no HD6970, just HD6950)

GTX470 3-way SLI vs GTX570 SLI vs HD6950 CF (at 1920x1200)
Metro 2033: 59 vs 54 vs 50
BC2: 101 vs 103 vs 96
Dirt 2: 135 vs 138 vs 131
Far Cry 2: 150 vs 153 vs 147
Crysis Warhead: 84 vs 86 vs 87
3DMark Vantage GPU: 30534 vs 35665 vs 30610
Max system wattage: 794 vs 578 vs 473
Max GPU temp C: 92 vs 81 vs 89

From these numbers, I conclude:-
a. Adding a third GTX470 for US$160 is the most cost effective way to achieve same level of framerate
b. GTX470 3-way SLI will generate the most heat
c. Your Thermaltake 850W should be able to handle GTX470 3-way SLI, if the cards are not overclocked.
d. I personally prefer to squeeze the most out of a given system and so I would choose a 3rd GTX470. They should perform well enough into the release of Kepler

Tri-SLI is a mess and those numbers prove it. If scaling was alright the 3 GTX 470s would be the fastest of the bunch. Why do you need 3 cards anyway ?
