New and need basic first steps with Phenom II BE

Thread Starter
I've searched and read many threads before posting this but the forum is too extensive; sorry if it's a repeat of something from the past.

My question is this: Where would be the best starting point for some minor OC'ing that doesn't push the limits of the hardware but will help get the most out of what I have for gaming? Just looking for the basics of where to start with OC'ing.

I haven't downloaded or installed AMD Overdrive yet as I just learned about it.

I just re-built my system with some current h/w but don't have a huge budget. I have never overclocked before but currently have my EVGA GPU overclocked using their s/w.

I was given the MOBO and OCZ Reaper RAM and added a Phenom II 965 BE. I also added 4 more GB of Mushkin Blackline RAM because it was a great deal, DDR2 is getting hard to find and the timings were almost identical (each is a matched pair of 2GB DDR2 1066). The only variance was the tRAS which was 15 on the OCZ and 18 on the Mushkin (also slight difference in the voltage range but with overlap). I have the timings matched at 5-5-5-18 but haven't changed the voltage yet. I know it's best not to run mis-matched RAM but these were so close I went ahead and pulled the trigger.

I was unsuccessful recently getting the RAM to run at 1066 but hope to resolve that with voltage tweaking or ?

The rest of my system specs are below.

Your best bet, IMO, is to go into BIOS and BAM! up the multiplier a couple notches.

This, chances are you will be able to get a couple 100 MHz out of it at stock volts.
Also do not bother with cpu overclocking utilities in windows keep it in the bios.

up your cpu-nb to x12 multi and try to run cpu multi at x18.5. if it fails prime, try x18. that should run fine.
let us know what happens after doing this.
