[DT] New Study: No Cell Phone/Cancer Link Found in Children - Page 2

Our lecturers told us ionizing radiation harms the DNA by forming hydroxyl ions(like lye the alkali material) that bind and disrupt guanine - cytosine bonds.
The whole stuff is inconclusive because they are chasing the wrong question imo. If nonionizing radiation does not rip electrons, then all it does is heat up the atoms. So the bigger question should be whether heat is bad>now that is tough to answer lemme brief in on that(at least until they don't rearrange the research plot and fund 100 times the $$$).

That and free radicals. The potential for damage from free radicals is far more than from hydroxyl ions, since they can cascade until they come in contact with an antioxidant. Did you learn about radicals?

free radicals. is that like what happens to meat when it gets cooked and turns brown?

Essentially. It happens when heating polyunsaturated fats upwards of 195 degrees C. A single bond split in half, leaving one electron on one carbon and the other on the other carbon. These are very unstable and when they bond with something else, produce another free radical (unless what they bond with happens to be another free radical or an antioxidant).

News is good. My daughter has been playing with my iPhone pretty much since she was born. She's only 20 months old and will have her own device once I upgrade. I'll just load hers up with kids apps and disney movies.

And before anyone calls me nuts, if you're not a parent, you have positively no idea how valuable of a distraction a phone with a movie playing provides when you're out a dinner or shopping and yada yada and your toddler doesn't want to sit still. Invaluable.

i had to wiki that for a less layman explanation of it

Oops, I caught an error. It's not the double bond that splits, it's a single bond. If a double bond split, it would leave a lone pair, not a single electron. A lone pair isn't nearly as destructive, as it can't propagate.

Well I quoted my lecturer because he was specific to say that the only free radical formed, that causes permanent damage to DNA was the hydroxyl anion. This may be a bias on his part, but I know the difference between toxins and radiation. That is the only harm ionizing radiation causes(by splitting water in two) afaik. Photons are not toxins that reduce or oxide other stuff.
The journal states the same, not by ripping electrons, so no reduction or oxidation takes place.

I get what you're saying. Anion typically implies a full negative charge of a lone pair, not a single electron, so that's why I said that. Just a difference in nomenclature, I suppose.

Lots of different molecules can have their bonds split by ionizing radiation. It's not limited to water. Ozone, for instance, easily splits into a radical O2 and O. I don't see why hydroxide radicals are the only ones capable of causing permanent DNA damage.
