Running 2 6970's With A 7xxx Card or 680

Basically i had to RMA my 580GTX with ebuyer as it died just after 7 months...

Ive never been a fan of nvidia after my 7800GTX burnt alive back in MOHAA days

So i was left with a choice of some awful branded 580 or go back to AMD as my mobo is crossfire and get 2 Gigabyte 6970's as ebuyer wouldnt refund my money which is understandable it was the only choice, Now as i understand AMD are pushing the 7xxx cards through and we should be seeing them shortly.. Im guessing when COD and BF3 come out along with the 680's ect.

Now im looking to upgrade my CPU/Mobo/Ram when the ivy bridge comes out as im still rocking 775 and was thinking i could throw in a 3rd Gfx card.. So my question is do you think the 7000 series cards marry in well with the 6000 cards or will they just BSOD me as ive had some issues in the past with crossfire on this motherboard (Maximus II Formula) Worse board ive ever bought. And dont want any problems on a new board.

Or what is your opinion on this SLI or CrossFireX configuration on boards like the Asus Maximus IV Extreme does it work well or do people have problems with it?

If it works ok i may buy a 680GTX and link in the 6970's if it doesnt a 7970 it is.

Also do you think a Corsair AX1200 will be enough to power that setup or should i aim for the silverstone 1500w?

Regards
Lee

The ax1200 will power 3 gtx 580s easily that is more then enough for anything you have in mind even next gen graphics because they will use lower nm technology and not require as much power and be more efficient...

I purchased my ax1200 and sure it's overkill, but also very efficient and of very high quality parts.

New Keplar Nvidia cards will be at least Q1 of 2012. Go for whats available now IMO.

Unless the 7000 series is just a die shrink and/or rebadge with no architectural changes, I believe you'll be out of luck with crossfire together with the 6970s. However, there's almost nothing that 2 6970s can't handle unless you're running eyefinity with 3 30 inch monitors and pushing metro 2033 to the max. I kinda doubt that since you're still rocking 775. Post your full system specs for a better answer.

Also, unless you have a board with a hydra/ lucid chip, nvidia and Amd aren't going to play together outside of using the nvidia card for physx only, which would be huge waste of money. Regardless, the hydra/lucid thing really isn't ready for prime time. There's just too much overhead.

Yeah, you're going to be cpu bound before you really put those 6970s to work. What resolution are you looking at?

I say if you want to upgrade, you need to do it all. Sell the 6970s to help pay for it. Buy a single 7000 series or keplar. Until then, hold off on anything else.

I am on a Dell U2711 so 2560x1440 i did know i was cpu bound my last card was a 4870x2 then went to 580GTX but died now here i am.

I would think that a single next gen card should be enough to handle that resolution. It should be much cooler and quieter than you current setup.
