Should i buy am3+ now?

Thread Starter
I am planning on making a biuld with an athlon 2 x3 to hold me over and then bulldozer off of an am3+ mobo. My question is if i should go through and get the am3+ mobo (probably a 990fx) now or wait till bulldozer comes out and buy once boards come out then. I heard that buying a board now would just stop me from using bulldozer to its full potential when it comes out?! Thanks.

better boards will probably be out when bulldozer comes, so if you can wait with your current pc i would definitely wait

AM3+ supports both older AM3 chips & the newer bulldozer chips. I say wait until after Bulldozer comes out, when the CPU's are reviewed. Also, any bugs in the 990FX/X boards should be pardon the pun, "bulldozed" out by then. Bulldozer is taking a longer time to release because AMD wasn't happy with the current revision(s). Better to have a polished product out a bit later, I say. Then, compare Intel's offering to AMD's so you can get the best bang for your buck.

I have heard the same thing. But then i still went out and bought a new am3 mobo even though i know i will get a bulldozer when the eventually release. I figure that i get to use a new mobo now, then i get the bulldozer and even though im not using it to its full potential i will still feel like its a huge upgrade, then a few months after that i will get a new mobo again and feel like i got a whole new processor when it unlocks it true potential! I do not suggest doing this really, I am just horrible with my money lol

I'd wait till Bulldozer comes out. Better AM3+ boards will be released when when Bulldozer is and they'll be probably be cheaper too. Also, an Athlon II X3 won't be much faster than a Pentium E5300. I'd suggest just overclocking your current CPU while you wait.

My personal suggestion.
You can get a am3+ board and an athlon x3. Unlock that x3 to an x4. That should hold you long enough until bugs have been dealt with with bios updates and whatnot. When the time is right, pick up a bulldozer and pop it in. Make sure you read some reviews of the bulldozer first, though.

your AM3 board for your athlon II may work for bulldozer, depends on the mobo manufacturer... so you may not need to buy an AM3+ mobo. also, the new upcoming FM2 socket in 2012 is more pressure to use ur AM3 board and hold off on purchasing an AM3+ board if it is possible. def wait things out till more info comes out when bulldozer drops.
