Looking for a fast and light laptop for university

What is your maximum budget? $1250

What country are you in? United States of America

What will be the uses of this laptop? Internet browsing, general office and productivity tasks, a little video editing/transcoding, random audio production, absolutely no gaming (or at least next to none)

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you? Nope

What screen size do you require? Preferably something light and small, probably less than 13"

What screen resolution do you require? At least 1366x768

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay? Preferably new, but if used gives me a significant discount then I'm all for it!

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet) At least 5-6 hours

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings? I won't be playing any games

What operating system do you need? (if any) Either OS X or Windows will work, even a distro of Linux would do

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.) I like brushed aluminum and the color white , nothing glossy that will attract dust and finger prints please

How much hard drive space do you need? Doesn't matter really, I already have a 2TB external I will be using with all my data; however, an SSD would be nice (or I could use my current Vertex 2E 120GB)

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.) Not really...bluetooth would be nice, probably around 2 USB ports, SD card reader would be a plus, a webcam too, and maybe blu ray (but not necessary)

Is there anything else we need to know? I don't think so? At least I hope not Oh ya...almost forgot it needs to be really light to carry around campus!!!

Look into an Asus, they're always good.

And of course Apple,
I personally use a MBP (before unibody) and love it to death),
This is a refurb but definitely worth all the $$$

I think you already know what you want, especially by judging from your answer to the style: MacBook Air.

Lenovo X220 if you don't mind foregoing your colour preference. It even has an option for an IPS screen. Search around slickdeals.net for Lenovo coupon codes or employee pricing offers.

Thanks guys. Yes I was initially looking into the MacBook Air 2011, but I wanted to see if there were alternatives so that is the main reason why I posted this. I'll definitely look into some of those models you guys posted. Thanks again!

Samsung Series 9 or Vaio Z are closest equivalent in style. But Toshiba and Asus also make computers that are almost as light (3.2) computer WITH optical drives that are cheaper (Vaio Z also has optical drive).

I was considering the air, but the impossibility of important repairs (hard drive cannot be replaced) made me think twice.

Toshiba Portege R835-P56x:

Looks like a really ultra-portable laptop, probably the only 13.3" , ultra-portable laptop I've that comes with an optical drive. Also has USB 3.0, Bluetooth, Intel Wireless Display.
