Parents are looking for a new laptop on a limited budget

Thread Starter
Well my parents are in need of a new laptop and I know close to nothing about them, so, if I could get a little help I would be eternally grateful.

What is your maximum budget?
$400

What country are you in?
United Sates

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Internet use and word processing primarily, but some video streaming, such as netflix.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
No

What screen size do you require?
Preferably 14"+

What screen resolution do you require?
No preference

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
New, would also like it to be purchased from somewhere that offers a decent warranty, as it tends to take a lot of abuse.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
A few hours, nothing insane. They will have power most of the time it will be used.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
No games.

What operating system do you need? (if any)
If it would cut back on costs it would be preferable buy one without an operating system pre installed, as we have windows disks, and I will be trying to make them use Linux, anyways.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
No preference.

How much hard drive space do you need?
300 gigs should do.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
No.

Is there anything else we need to know?
As stated it would be nice to have a warranty, but it would also be nice to get a laptop without an operating system pre-installed to cut back on costs.

Thanks!

Heres a 15.6".

The intel pentium processor is a stripped down sandy bridge. It should be comparable to the older gen i3's. If you don't mind the 15.6" screen it should be a great deal.

like suggested above i would go with the hp g series laptop fits all of your criteria ( i just picked up a g6 from bb today for 479) although i dont think they would need a core i3 chip so you could probably pick up the one that has an amd chip on it i believe it was tagged for 329. sorry i cant provide links atm since i saw these at the actual store. also i would suggest checking out a frys or a microcenter if you have one near you i always see laptops going for 299 that either meet almost if not all your criteria

hope this helps

If you can go a bit over your budget look at the HP Probook 4530s. I'm ordering it tomorrow actually. Here's some reviews on it, looks solid for the price.
