new amd build (i'm a beginner)

Thread Starter
Soooo...
i've always thought it would be neat to build a computer all by my self, but it has always been kind of a goal that i'd like to meet, but never really would. But, i got lucky with a great summer job and set a budget of 1,050-ish. i've read A LOT of stuff on here (probly 10-15 hours total), and watched a lot of youtube videos, and looked at some parts and here's what i got:

cpu - AMD Phenom II 970 BE (one step above the popular 960, for, like, $10 more,) link

mobo - Asus m4a88td-v (may need some help on this one, not too experienced w/ mobos). link

edit: mobo changed to ASRock 970 EXTREME4 link

gpu - Gigabyte hd 6870 link

ram - I need help!! (preferably 4 gig)

psu - corsair enthusiast series tx650 link

edit: psu changed Antec EarthWatts EA-650 GREEN 650W link ( does it have enough connectors?)

os - ms windows 7 home premium

case - Antec three hundred illusion black steel etc.. link

hdd - wd caviar blue 320gig (i don't need huge capacaties)

edit: hdd changed to Samsung Spinpoimt F3 1tb link

optical drive - some cheap sony thing

monitor - acer 23"

And for what? you may ask..
i plan to use this for bf2 and bf3, and any other games that look interesting...

note: i am a hard-core amd fanboy and proud.

aaanyways, im just postin' this here to see if this build meets the standard of awesomeness here at the ocn, and incase i've done something terribly wrong with part-choosing (which i probably have), and if so, don't hate.

ooyea and i'll prolly throw in another 6870 in a few months

at this point in time, you should be going with a 9 series motherboard. and go for the cheapest x4 cpu you can get(955).for ram i suggest you look at 2x2 1600mhz.

CPU: +1 for 955, if you plan to OC you don't need 970, that's pretty the same chip as 955 but it has higher stock frequency

MOBO: +1 for 9xxx series from AMD chipsets. Native BD support as well as AM3 CPUs like 955. IF you don't need a CrossFire choose something with 970 like ASUS m5a97 evo or something with 990x/990fx if you plan CF. Then pick up M5a99x EVO

RAM: idk how are the prices in the place where you live like, but you should think about getting a 4gb (in 2 sticks) of 1866MHz RAM because BD will have a native support for 1866.

HDD: if the price isn't too high for you, go into Samsung F3 or WD Black series.

EDIT: you should also consider buying an aftermarket CPU cooler if you plan any decent OCing. CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ should be enough

newegg/frys/buy.com have had the samsung f3 1t drives for $50

if your planning to oc or upgrade in he future, get the 955 and a 9xx board (955/965/970 all have unlocked multiplier for easy oc)

the cheapest 2x2g 1600 ram kit would also be a good choice

Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model KHX1600C9D3B1K2/4GX $25
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820104203

are you planning on getting a bluray drive?
most bd readers are around $60, bluray burner $80-100

Definitely want a 900 series motherboard. ASUS M5A97 or ASRock 970 Extreme4
This Seagate 500GB is better for the same cost (lower actually, ships free)
RAM suggested above is a good kit, overclockable
You will get a better PSU deal with this PSU

Is 970 able to do full speed CF?

AMD does not spec the 970 to be able to perform CrossfireX or SLI at 8x-8x (the very least you will need to avoid bottlenecks on most cards). Apparently the ASRock 970 can do it, perhaps as a relabelled 990X chipset.

The RAM suggested above works well.
I question the worth of the Phenom II x4 970 by the way, since you can get x6s for around the same price
The 955 for $110 may be a better deal as a placeholder for the upcoming FX series (assuming you're interested in the upgrade)
