What to upgrade?

Thread Starter
So i've been playing the bf3 alpha trial and with my setup @ 1920x1080 my framerate is pretty bad. So i was wondering, should i go for a gtx 570 (with this q6600) or should i upgrade to sandy bridge and keep the gtx 260? Which would i benefit more from in terms of gameplay?

Upgrading from a GTX260 to a GTX570 will certainly bring a noticeable framerate improvement while upgrading the CPU to a SB will not have much, if any, impact.

However, at your resolution of 1920x1080, a Q6600 @ 3.4GHz will likely act as a bottleneck for a GTX570 for some games.

To estimate the size of the bottleneck
-The first link below has a study that shows that an i7 needs to be roughly 3.6GHz to avoid bottlenecking GTX285 SLI at 1920x1200 for a variety of games.
-Assume a GTX570 (480 cuda cores) performs roughly the same as GTX285 SLI (240 cores x2)
-As clock for clock, Core 2 Quad lags a little behind an i7, I estimate a Q6600 needs to be, say, 3.8-4GHz to avoid being a BN.

Conclusion
Even with such a CPU bottleneck, I still think it is a better move to upgrade to a GTX570 as it can remain with you when you upgrade to the next platform.

You probably WILL need a better GPU for BF3 but don't judge on anything by this Alpha version of the game because it's probably not good optimized and will most likely not get the same FPS as in the full version of the game. But a 570 will be a good upgrade.

I think an i5-2500k + massive OC + 570 SLI setup is a great combo, or even a sli 560 Ti setup, or even a 470 or 480 SLI setup.

Upgrade the card and wait till next year for new cpus to be launched.
A gtx 570 will give a higher increase in fps than a new cpu.
