Overclock Question / Theory

Right now I have my i7 920 Clocked to 4Ghz. Now Im just wondering, in comparison to say a Intel Core i7-975 Extreme edition STOCK, my processor is technically FASTER for simple single threaded applications.

But of course when it comes down to multitasking programs the 975 will beat me due to its more advanced architecture and higher caches.

Basically what Im trying to get at here, is that my processor IS faster rite now, but cant DO as mucH? (if that makes any sense)

Or am I totally wrong, that regardless of my faster clock speed the 3.4Ghz 975 will still open things faster?

No, your CPU is faster. And I believe even the cache can't compensate that, so you'd be faster in multitasking as well. It's just too much of a gap, 4x600Mhz, cache can't compensate for it

HRm, I dont feel like I picked a good example becasue after looking at some charts is clear that I am superceeding the 975. How would it compare to say a i7 995x?

That's 3.33Ghz Hex?
Then it depends very much on the apps you're using. If you game, Quad @4Ghz is better. If you're using heavy multitasking, Hex @3.33 is better (by far).

Most often you can just multiply the corecount times the frequency, to get a relative general performance index of similar CPUs +- 10% due to cache.
