No, not really. They still like to appeal to users that want basic cable, which has the cable company taking an otherwise digital channel and converting it to analog, eliminating the need for a receiver for the first hundred channels or so. It's a matter of convenience.

Sort of. DTV/Dish do own their satellites and make use of them for just TV, but the important thing is that they don't have a middleman (HFC network in the case of cable, or fiber in the case of FiOS) so they don't have to apply anywhere near as much compression.

Thats on our boat so we can't really get anything else. Its nice to have it all really and sometimes its pretty fast but thats a rare occasion. I have DSL at my house.
