Question about network cable... - Page 2

post #11 of 36
So you are at your friends house and the cable you bough round doesn't work, but his one does when plugged between your PC and the router?

If so, then the pairs have been incorrectly matched and crimped into the plugs or there is a break in the copper cabling.

He is using his own cable from his PC to the router, but should I try to use his cable and check if it works?

As the others have said, your cable should be fine.

FTP = Foil Twisted Pairs.
STP = Shielded Twisted Pairs.
UTP = Unshielded Twisted Pairs.

UTP is the most common and least expensive.

If it's a patch cable (what you want to use to connect your PC to a router), both ends will look like this:

If it's a crossover cable, one end will look like above and the other like this:

This is used when connecting one PC directly to another.

Why don't you have your friend try plugging the new cable into his computer and see if it works. Whether it does or not, we will have more information to help you out. You can also do the reverse and plug his cable (working) into your computer to see if it works. That will tell us whether it's the cable or your computer.

Just my 2c worth...hope it helps,

Rich

If you tried with another cable, and it works, then its the cable defective.

So, I just tried his cable and he tried mine. His cable didn't work for me and my cable worked for him. Might it be my motherboard or something that is the problem?

Okay, next thing to check is your NIC.

Was it working when you were back at your house? Do you have it set for a network at home?

I'm not as familiar with Win 7 Home version, but when you first plug in the cable, do you get a Windows popup asking you to identify the network as "Home, Work, or Public"?

If your adapter is seeing the presence of a network, it should trigger this.

NIC = Network Interface Controller (or card)

So you don't get any response when you plug in the cable from Windows?

Maybe your NIC is diabled in the BIOS? Or maybe it's disabled in the Windows Device Manager?

If your cable worked with his PC then the cable works... Maybe his router isn't set up with DHCP, so it wont give your computer an IP adress... Try seting a static IP

your motherboard has autodetecting ethernet ports, corssover or not shouldnt matter, you have a faulty cable.
