Will MSI approve my friends RMA?

Thread Starter
So my friend has a build almost the same as mine except he has a 5770, an OCZ 600w psu, and an 880GMX-E45 motherboard.

Link to motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130276

He called me up this morning to tell me he booted up his computer to play some BC2 and after about 30 seconds of BC2 it shut off and when he restarted it some smoke came out the top exhaust fan and it shut off by itself again.

After he removed the side panel and looked around inside he noticed what looks to be a burn mark on the motherboard to the left of the processor.

He did use the auto oc genie to overclock it to 3.6ghz and was running it like that for a good two months and was going to fill out the form to RMA the board this morning but noticed that on the request form it says:

"MSI reserves the rights to rejects any RMA returns that’s are been physical damaged, missing/bent pins, burn, cracked, or other damages due to abuse. "

Also he says hes pretty sure MSI doesn't require a receipt as he bought the motherboard at Fry's about 8 months ago and no longer has the receipt, any truth to this statement?

As always any information is very much appreciated. If you guys require any additional information I will get it from him.

They should, they're talking about if someone took a lighter to their mobo and attempted to RMA it. As long as the burn is from something that could generate that much heat they should take it.

Sounds like the VRM's blew up. Heh...another MSI VRM problem...and they should RMA it since it's motherboard failure and not user created.

Yea, never OC on a MSI board especially a cheaper one.

he OC'd a quad on 4+1 phase, this goes against everything OCN stands for. They should RMA it. just send it back after a battery reset.

btw, i OC on 4+1. i think.

Thanks for the responses.

He told me that after clearing the cmos it boots up but bsod's after running any application for 10+ seconds.

He is going to go ahead and attempt to RMA it.

Lol....why in the world would you try to turn on the pc after it clearly had burn marks and smoked...? You could've very well screwed up something else by now.

1. Never use those auto OC feautres
2. Never use a low end MSI with a higher end processor
3. Never use any 3+1 phase (including non-MSI boards) motherboard with a processor that consumes more power (i.e. 125W+, overclocked)

What processor was it by the way? Voltage? Cooling?

No receipt.... most manufacturers reject without a receipt, not sure where you got that rumour from. I know Mushkin has made some exceptions but that's it.

^Not true. I RMA'ed a 790gx MSI board without a receipt and MSI gladly replaced the board for me. It was due to a blown VRM. They do replacements based on serial numbers, so as long as the information sticker is intact, MSI should accept the board.
