If you blew a Mosfet, or he blew a Mosfet, they will most likely approve your RMA. I have returned 2 boards and got back replacements within 2 weeks from MSI because of VRM failure. If its in MSI's small 1 year return period.

What processor was it by the way? Voltage? Cooling?

No receipt.... most manufacturers reject without a receipt, not sure where you got that rumour from. I know Mushkin has made some exceptions but that's it.
He has a 965BE just like I do, he ran it stock for about six months and at 3.6GHz for the past two. Not sure on the voltage as he told me he was using the auto oc genie in bios. For cooling he has a Xigmatek Dark Knight.

Just looked at the link in your sig for AMD Motherboard VRM Info and after asking my friend he says it doesn't say anywhere on the box what the max TDP support is and since the 965BE he has is the 125w version you think MSI would give some type of warning about not using a CPU over 95w.

Also looked around a bit and it seems MSI does RMA's via serial like daydream99 mentioned so he's hoping to get replacement approval and most likely sell the replacement and get a decent motherboard.

That motherboard does not even support 125W CPUs, I now realize. Looks like your friend was definitely jumping into failure.
I wouldn't necessarily call it MSI's fault, it's stated on their site that there is no 125W support; should also be somewhere on the motherboard box.

i would keep the 965 bit quiet if MSI ask, they have every right to refuse RMA.
Did your friend not do any research before buying?

EDIT:Incorrect,it does support 140w..

The newegg page says 140W processor support
I'm guessing it was the VRMs overheating, those things really need heatsinks.

Has MSI gotten wind of their widespread sucky VRM designs? This has been going on for like over a year now.

They advertise all this army grade stuff like Icy Choke (20c lower temp) and Hi-C CAP (8x longer lifetime). Do these parts really cost them more to include, or is it all puffery? I mean, they seam to be at least trying to make a non-sucky VRM, no?

I blew a couple of 880GMA-E45s (which are rated 95W max and don't have the Hi-C CAPs). My 880GMA-E53 (which is rated up to 140W) and has both Hi-C CAPs and an extra choke (compared to the 880GMA-E45) has held up with a 125W CPU, but I just don't trust it.

On the other hand, my socket 939 MSI K8NGM2-FID has been running a 110W opteron (overclocked to it's knees) since 2006 without any issues.

It seems to me that MSI has to acknowledge and address this issue or their rep will remain in the toilet.
