1 GTX580 Matrix vs dual 6950 CUII , help me decide please.

Hey guys,

I am almost done gathering parts for my build (in my sig) and am stuck on making a choice for graphics cards. I am currently deciding between these 2 configurations:

Option 1: A single ASUS ROG GTX580 Matrix Platinum 1.5GB - $550

Option 2: Dual ASUS Radeon HD 6950 DirectCU II 2GB in CrossFireX - $656

I understand from reading a bit that there are some diminishing returns on multiple-GPU rigs. I have never had a SLI/CF setup, and always have gone with single card solutions. I have also never built this good of a system though.

Now I know that the MSi GTX580 Lightning is touted as the best 580 around, but I am a big ASUS guy and am sticking with ASUS for my GPU purchase for sure.

There is about a $100 price difference between the 2 options listed above. The GTX card has some crazy overclocking features, and is cosmetically superior. Other than that, I am really hard-pressed at making a decision.

Any opinions are appreciated. I plan to play games at max settings - namely BF3 in October - but probably not any 3D or crazy 6 monitor stuff.

Thanks in advance!

I'm happy with my Matrix, it's a absolute beast and temps are pretty low even at 1GHz on air. However, if I were to do CFX 6950's, I'd pick up a pair of used reference cards that have been flashed to 6970. The two cards will be cheaper than the Matrix. I wouldn't bother to OC them more than 6970 speeds. A nice cheap plug-n-play setup.

6950s flashed to 6970s vs a single 580, the 6950s are better. Still funny to me that 2 of the 2nd best ATI cards are barely better than a single 580, nvidias 2nd best card.

So should I stick with my initial choice of a single GTX580? I am kinda leaning that way right now.

No, they're much faster than a single GTX 580. http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon...firex-review/8

2x6950s are miles better than a GTX 580. They also happen to be cheaper:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161368
Total: $520
So for $30 you get much better performance

I'd rather go for the stronger single card solution. A single GTX580 will eat up any game at 1080p maxed out without issue. You could also opt in for one of those 3GB models, and SLI later down the road once they get a lot cheaper too.

No.

A 3GB GTX580 would be a huge waste for a single monitor unless he was running 2560x1440 or 2560x1600.

For single monitor, I'd go for a pair of HD6950's because;

- They're cheaper than single GTX580 Matrix
- They perform a lot better
- They can unlock shaders to 6970's and perform even better
- Profit.

I think the choice is very clear here...

Why would you pay the same money for lot less performance?

I would get the best most singel card and sli it in the future. It's a 580, which gives you higher head room, also, if your getting the matrix card, you can easily clock that sucker up to 980mhz and on 80 fan speed and pump that voltage to 1.2 and 100 fan speed to get that 1000mhz!! It's a much better 580 than your normal 580. Plus the light show is a dream to look at!

I'd go with the 580. I like being able to play new games (ahem, Crysis 2)...

I'm scared.

I haven't had a problem with ATI/AMD delivering on the Crossfire front, so I vote a few HD 6950's.

Ever want to go multi-monitor? You'll have the VRAM. Not enough power? Can always add a third for Tri-Fire. EVer want to go nVidia? Sell both and offset the cost of a new card.
