Why is my mum's laptop overheating? :S

Thread Starter
Hi, normally wouldn't ask questions like this, but I'm at a loss here.

Basically, my mum told me her laptop kept crashing. I had a look at it, installed coretemp, and it's idling at 80*C (on a laptop cooler, which I advised her to get a few weeks ago).

The laptop's not some piece of junk, it's HP, about 2 years old max (out of warranty though) c2d I believe, 4 gigs of ram. Running windows 7.

I opened it up, and I couldn't see any noticeable dust buildups. I'm at a loss.

Any ideas why this might be?

Cheers in advance.

Did you take off the heatsink and reapply TIM? I had an older Toshiba and they had done a really crappy TIM application job, after applying my own TIM temps dropped by 20C

I would also start with TIM application and ensuring fans are working properly at all times.

Yeah, I'm going to agree that the thermal paste was probably applied incorrectly, and it was only a matter of time before it got worse. Time to re-apply it!
