wrong windows?

Thread Starter
hey everyone. just wondering if anybody can tell me if this is the right windows that I ordered. the one I received says it has service pack 1 and I'm not sure if this thing is the full windows home premium or just an update. I wanted to order the one with the disk where you can use it on multiple pc's. this one says in the details section that once installed you can't transfer it but I'm not looking to transfer. I've also seen some editions where the os locks to your motherboard and that's it. I would like to be able to install windows on more than one pc I am building. if this is not the right one can someone post me a link to the right one. thanx all

The one you ordered is OEM, which means it is for a single installation / tied to your motherboard. Its full version though.

If you want the one that can be installed multiple times on computers (not at the same time though), then you want this. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116716

The difference is OEM is for 1 machine/activation, and Retail is for any single machine at one time, meaning you can reinstall it over and over, as long as it is only being used on one machine at a time.

thanx for the reply. is it worth it to pay double and order the retail version for now or should I just keep the oem version? I only need to use it once for now and I've heard windows 8 is coming anyways but want a more experienced opinion. also is there any other place that sells it for less than newegg?

I believe if you replace the board with the same board it should be fine. Otherwise you are supposed to buy a new key, its tied to the 1 motherboard.

In reality you can usually call MS and tell them your key isn't working anymore and they will give you a new one, but its OEM and that's against there EULA so..

Retail gives you the most freedom.

I'd just stick to OEM disk, newegg is usually a safe bet for getting the OS. They have had a few sales on this version though lately. This is about as cheap as your going to get though, Lowest it goes is around $80-90 on sales even.
