RAID question. . . From a RAID noob. .

post #1 of 2
Thread Starter
So, I am about to be buying another HDD for a few reasons. I was going to get a SSD but I wouldnt want anything less then 128GB and thats still 100+ right there...

Options for HDD:
1) WD Black 500GB 7200RPM -> $59
2) WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM -> $59
3) WD Black 1TB 7200RPM -> $79 w/ $10 off Promo

Reason for buying Second HDD:
1) Wanted to do personal benches on Black vs blue
2) My ASUS crosshair did not want to boot using my current equipment, Boot Device included.
3) Wanted to try out RAID 0 using each combination of the drives as well.

Want to find out if I can make arrays on drives of different capacity. . . I.E. using a Black 500GB w/ Samsung 1TB ? both 7200 RPM

I would of course have to stop after 500GB of the Black. Or do these have to be the same size.

You can make the raid work with 2 different drives if you want, but it is ideal to keep them identical. If you do the 500gb black with the 1tb F3 then you will only have a 1tb RAID 0 because the controller will match the F3 to the 500gb black so they are both 500gb drives. You will be much better off getting another F3 or 2 500gb blacks.

So basically it will work it probably wont perform as well as it could and you will lose 500gb of storage. But on the bright side you could always try it and see. If it doesnt work you can use the 500gb black as your OS drive and the F3 as storage which will perform a bit better having your OS working on a separate drive.

Oh and yea, get one of those blacks over the blue.
