The original 32nm chips which where the first I3's it simple came down too don't use the same voltage you would for the bigger parts. On my old I3 I had 4.4 with 1.35v now with sandybridge and the 970/980 the process of 32nm was refined a bit in each step allowing for safer higher voltage. All these dead chips came from everyone thinking I can just pump 1.5v just like I did with my 45nm without any ill effect.

it seems like everytime intel changes fabrication processes there are rumors about how the new chips wont be able to sustain the voltages needed to oc. iirc, the same thing happened when intel introduced 45nm chips.

the reason chips fail is not because the wafers are thinner. its due to electromigration, which is when increased voltages and temperatures cause interconnects (wires in the cpu) to break down the insulating material and cause shorts.

IF there was evidence that the 32nm process was failing at higher voltages, electromigration would be the reason. not thinner wafers.

who puts 1.4 through a clarkdale for 24/7 usage?!


I would take:

Cooler operation
Greater Overclockability
Power efficiency
lower production costs

over durability any day. especially considering most people who overclock don't keep their proc for more than a year or 2, maybe 3
