So am I but I still get up from gaming every hour or so. In fact, I don't see how people sit there for hours on end without getting up.

i've had some epic gaming sessions in the past, 12, 14, even 16 hours at a time, and i still had to get up just for basic things like getting another drink or going to the washrom. I cant see how someone could sit in one position gaming long enough to actually cause a clot. there had to be other factors at play here.

Wouldn't be a problem for people with a small problem. Probably wouldn't be a problem for people who keep on peeing their pants while playing horror titles.

Sad yes, tragedy...no.
Yet another death caused by stupidity that will no doubt litter our newspapers and media for days and days just like amy winehouse.
No scratch that, i care more about this poor fool than i do her.
Reality check:
A corporal names mark anthony pailin was killed a week or so ago serving in the uk army, he did more for his country than some fat kid addicted to halo and amy winehouse combined yet you hear nothing on the news or in the newspapers about him.
Ok rant over.

I found this article pretty funny. Trying raise awareness of a health issue, then dying of said health issue, oh the irony!

Am I a horrible person?

Ugh... I saw this story last night and immediately predicted some of the OCN respones. Looks like my prediction was validated.

Well, there's the fact that this guy gamed for 12 hours and got a blood clot. Probably completely unrelated.

Dude, you are an anecdote rather than a statistic. You disprove what's postulated in the article no more than an 80 year old smoker disproves that cigarettes increase your risk of cancer. The guy sat in the same place for huge periods of time because he was gaming. Doing so can lead to DVT, which is why people on long-haul flights are warned to stretch their legs. Even if he was on an airplane flight across the world he probably would have gotten up a couple times to use the bathroom and this would be prevented. It's the addictive nature of gaming that lead to this, and I say that as a gamer.

He's not blaming it on video games, he's making the connection that video games -> long time sitting still -> DVT. Neither of those arrows implies a direct correlation, but rather an increased risk. There's nothing wrong with raising awareness of this problem for gamers; it might save someone's life. Besides, it's not as if he's trying to abolish all video games; he's trying to get gamers off their butts once in a couple hours. Seems like a worthy objective to me.

Yes. Not because of the perceived irony but because of your reading comprehension . The guy who died didn't try to raise awareness of a health issue. He died so now his dad is raising awareness.

I just don't see how you can sit in the same position for that long. I game. Alot. And I'm on my computer doing work alot as well. I have to at least shift how I'm sitting or get up for a drink or something. How can you sit in the same exact position for 12 hours while gaming without even shifting your legs at all.

DVT isn't caused by sitting. It can happen to anyone at anytime.
There is a test that can be done for early detection.
It has nothing to do with gaming.

This story is extremely creepy to me because when I was 20 or 21 I had a clot form in my left calf due to DVT just like that guy. Luckily it did not travel anywhere and I had it removed/dissolved or whatever. The cause of it for me was the combination of a blood disorder known as factor five lieden, which messes with clotting, and the fact that I was/still am fat and not physically active. Reading about that guy was somewhat of a wake up call. It's pretty scary how similar it was to my ordeal. Time to start eating healthier and begin a little exercising.

looks like he wasnt healthy to start off and is obviously obese and i dought gaming is the main issue to his death!
