ATI is dead. You are right about AMD for the multi-monitor setup performing better, but the OP didn't ask about multi-monitor.

470 sli on air will out perform the 6950 (while using way more power mind you and be hotter/louder as well).

Going to water does a few things, most importantly it reduces fan noise, reduces operating temps, reduces power usage, and increases clock rates.

The biggest question you have to ask yourself is how much do you want to spend now, and how much are you willing to spend later...

More often than not getting the single most powerful card you can afford is the best way to go, however with 400 series being so dang dirty cheap, it's hard to pass them up specially in SLI configurations for the same, or less than a single high end AMD/Nvidia card.
Pretty much this. Alternatively you could score the refurbed 465's on newegg for 99$ and buy the extended warranty for even more in savings. There's a thread on OCN about these with (IIRC) half of them having the original black PCB that unlocks to a full 470.

I love 465's. I had a pair myself before I bought the 6950's I'm using now. Balla and grunion (isn't that who it was Balla?) even through up some benchies in actual games rather than synthetic benchmarks and the 470 does indeed trade blows with the 6950 at the resolution you'll be using, with the 6950 edging it out by a hair (IIRC).

Definitely snag a pair of cheap 400 series over a single 6950. You'll have far better performance.

Here are some crysis bench results

stock clocks no AA

stock clocks 8xAA

stock clocks 16xQAA

700 core no AA

700 core 8xAA

750 core no AA

750 core 8xAA

800 core no AA

800 core 8xAA

Now I only ran the 16xQAA 1 time because it ran out of memory halfway through the bench and you can see how it suffered from the min fps in that bench. These cost me $250(well not really since I sold my 570 and used that to get them and made some money), not bad though for what they can do.

Nope, I'll be using a single monitor running games at 1920 by 1080.

Well thanks for all the posts. I've decided that I'll go ahead and snag those 2 GTX 465s. All the benchmarks were very helpful, especially the stock clocks with Crysis.

The case I'm getting has 6 fans, and Watercooling support for the future. I think it'll keep them pretty chill.

One more thing, this PSU should be fine right?

Again, thanks to everyone who gave their input, especially Nagle and Balla for their benchies!

2xGTX 465 are obviously faster for games that use SLI. If they unlock it's even better. An OCed GTX 470 is on par with an OCed HD6970.
