What case has the best airflow? SilverStone Raven RV02B-EW or HAF-X?

Hey,

I'm wondering what's the best case for airflow? I'm thinking the choice is between these two, but if you know of another let me know.

The SilverStone Raven RV02B-EW has three 180mm intake fans at the bottom and a 140mm exhaust fan at the top, and the motherboard is on a 90 degree angle.

The Cooler Master HAF-X has a 230mm front intake fan, a 200mm top fan, 200mm side fan, and a 140mm rear exhaust fan.

Things to note:
  • I'll have a Noctua NH-D14 on my overclocked i5 2500K
  • I'm not going to use CF/SLI and the graphics card I buy will be a DirectCU II model (dual fan)
  • I'm not going to do any watercooling

Thanks!

Either one will do great, its all upto looks and style.
The Silverstone series has really good proper air flow.

I have the HAF X, and I like it. I bought an extra 200mm Red Mega flow fan, to replace the side Black one, and put that one on the top and now I have 2x 200mm exhaust on top. 200mm MegaFlow Fan

There is also the FT02 FT02

Also the RV03 RV03

The RV02 Evolution has better airflow stock, but the HAF-X can really be improved, and it got more space inside smile.gif
Considering your needs, the Rv02 is a better choice.

Not a big fan of that much bottom intake. Have to go with the HAF-X.

I think the RV02-E is better than the FT02, isn't it?

But, the RV03 lacks one of the bottom 180mm intake fans? Or won't that make much of a difference?

The RV03 has 4x 120mm intake fans on the front, 2x 180mm intake fans on the bottom, 1x 120mm fan on the side, 1x 120mm exhaust fan on the top, 1x 120mm exhaust fan on the rear.

Will those extra fans make up for the lack of 1 180mm fan on the bottom? And won't the direction of the air be a bad thing? Coming in fast from the front and the bottom? And out the top and out the back? Or won't that cause a problem?

those three fans at the bottom are a pain in the ass. one of mine died already and another is knocking on it's way. but other than that minor flaw i like it. I've already ordered new proper fans

The 3x180mm intake fans of the RV02 is the same as the RV03. 2 of them are for the mobo/videocard. the other is for the HDD.
The RV03 the HDD/SSD mounts behind the case, and part of the 180mm fans blow to the back.

I prefer the look of the FT02 myself. Much simpler and cleaner. Its all upto looks and how you want the side window placed.
Some people when sitting at there desk, like to look at there case sometimes and see inside. So wherveer you sit, will be the one you want.

I would suggest HAF-X over RV02B-EW for 2 reasons due to the DirectCU II cooling design:-

a) when the graphics card is oriented vertically, some of the heatpipes are pointing down. Due to gravity, the cooling capacity is partially lost.

b) this cooling design dumps a good portion of the heat inside the case. With the airflow design of RV02B, hot exhaust air from the graphics card will inevitably be recirculated back into the graphics card and also to the NH-D14. See pic 2 below for an illustration.

Both are obviously not desirable. Although these 2 factors will likely not causing thermal problems (eg BSODs), nonetheless the cooling efficiency of the card and the CPU cooler are both reduced and the design feature of the RV02B is not best used. Silverstone does not recommend this case to go with cards having cooling design like DirectCU as maximum cooling performance cannot be achieved (see pic 1 below).
