Overclock Q6600 help is needed

Thread Starter
Hi folks,

First time on this forum, please be easy on me, thanks! ^^

I have got this Q6600 babe for 2 years and have never overclocked it.

Recently I have been playing some flight simulation games, so there are needs to up the CPU speed.

I am not an expert in this aspect, so I hope someone can help.

My new cooling system is Corsair H60, just got it yesterday.

My Q6600 is Step B Revision G0 so I know it can go as high up as 3.8GHz.

What exactly is the ceiling of this CPU?

I am trying Multiplier=9, FSB=420.

But I have doubts, the 2 2GB memory modules are old DDR2 800MHz, so I wonder if I set FSB to 420, do I also need to up the voltage to od DRAM in the BIOS?

Currently, I have tried out a number of CPU Core voltages from 1.26 through to 1.43125. Window booted up but after playing the flight simulation for a while the system gone BSOD.

So I further up it to 1.45000 and I also specifically changed the DRAM from Auto to 1.98.

At this setup, the idle temperature is standing at 46C with core 3 the lowest at 35C, they are never even by the way.

When the game runs, the maximum core 0 temperature was 71C.

can anyone shed some lights on how do I do it right? Also is there a program call Intel Burn Test for testing overclocked CPU stability?

Many thanks in advance!

First of all welcome..

Now you need better CPU cooler because your cores hit over 70C in games..

In stress tests like Prime95 or Intel Burn Test they would hit over 90C and your system would shut down..

Also I recommend you to go for 400MHz FSB x 9 = 3.6GHz (if you upgrade cooling) and if your Q6600 is up to the task as not every Q6600 would hit 3.6GHz on AIR cooling..

Is your Q6600 B3 or G0 stepping?

G0 are better overclockers and have higher Tjmax = 90C tha B3 which has Tjmax = 80C.. (its absolute operating core temperature)..

Keep your Vcore under 1.5V and your load core temperatures under 70C all the time for safe 24/7 operation..

CHEERS..

With an H6O you should have better temps. My G0 at 3.6GHz never hits much over 55C at full load with a stress test and H5O.

Start short term testing with OCCT then move to Prime95 Blend to finalize, 6-8 hours, but you should't be passing 60C really.

If you can get 420*9 to boot you're doing extremely well. Many G0 hit 3.6, a few hit 3.7-3.8 and very rarely they can make 4.0. Most top out at 3.6/1.5V in BIOS.
