one of GPS's main purposes was to detect nuclear detonation. how does that even work?

Just to take a wild stab at it, GPS works by triangulating your position relative to satellites. I would assume enough of the massive amount of energy that nuclear explosions release can make it to and be detected by at least 3 of those satellites, so it's location can also be triangulated.

It takes different amounts of times for a signal or wave of energy to reach each satellite. Comparing the differences in these times gives you the location.

Just an FYI - Soviet system concept fell apart at the end of the cold war. Currently being replaced by Glonass-M and now, K models. KM is being researched. They require around 22 Satellites in orbit in order to have world coverage. They currently have 23 in orbit, but had planned for 24. But due to a mishap, where the satellites where thrown into the pacific ocean since trouble with the upper stage of the Proton rocket failed. They then introduced the Glonass K and sent one into orbit, while bringing out another (I think Glonass-M) that was disabled, and put that online to make up for the 3 lost.
