cheap ddr2 video editing rig - Page 2

Not sure if anyone will be interested in the results of the build:

The rendering times on Stock cool&Q 3.3Ghz are:
1:06min H.264 1080p24 DSLR video straight video/audio no cuts or effects
rendered in 2:46 minutes by Sony Vegas Pro 10 to
1080p25 SonyAV internet HD

Waiting for bulldozer to come out was a bad idea.
I missed out on the ASUS mobo. Seems everyone
is salvaging old DDR2 on 4 slots like me.

I tried overclocking safely to 3.8Ghz but found very
minor gains in performance. It mostly just ran hotter.
Maybe the DDR2 is holding the cpu back?

Sony loads and plays videos super quick. No lag or stuttering. There is an
ugly line in the middle of the preview and lots of degredation of the image
even at best full; weak playback of H.264. My KMplayer with CoreAVC
plays the 1080 files so much better. I played with all the preview settings
but nothing changed. Besides buying a cuda card there isn't any way to
get high quality previews is there?
This is probably all I should spend for now as other expenses will be coming in
the next months. If there are any adjustments I should try please let me know.

^ Possible that the DDR2 (speed/timings)/IMC is holding things back; that or there is another bottleneck, i.e. HDD read/write, other programs...
A fairly low end 4+1 phase though, I wouldn't trust on an overclocked x6. Stock should be fine. There should be a performance increase though.

my DDR2 and drive seek and read times are a bottleneck for sure
OS/programs = 40gb 7200rpm 18seek 32read
Files = 500gb 7200rpm 22seek 68read
But in the end I think the 6 real cores make up for it.
Hard drives will always be easy to get cheap in the future.

There was a performance gain but the benchmarks didn't show a difference
that would make me want to risk overclocking on such a weak mobo like
you pointed out. The stock 1100t does shot past 3700Mhz according to
cpu-z when it needs the punch for calculations. That is enough for me.
No need for me to force the cpu to stay that high all the time. I like this
AMD a lot. It works like a champ without getting overly hot like an i7.

These minor changes showed better results than OCing
on the weak mobo.
-clean out HHDs, defragment, remove Hybernation.sys
-underclock GPU to reduce internal heat
-arrange internal fans for better flow and heat management
-move Sony Vegas temp back to C: OS/programs drive
-turn off aero theme when editing in Sony
-matching input-project-render formats/aspect rations properly
-not putting effects, transitions etc till all the rough cuts are made
for a smoother rough cut general perview.

Thanks for all your help.
I gotta stop tweaking this thing and just start shooting something to cut.
