hey Guys

Wonder if you can help

Im wanting to put all of my servers on IP

192.168.1.***

but im wanting all my client computers on IP

192.168.2.***

I have 1 Routor and 2 switches

my second switch is in my garage and all of my Servers are behind it
my 1st switch is in the loft of my house with my routor

Can i run 2 subnets off one routor?
i was thinking

255.255.255.0 for clients and 255.255.255.128 for servers?

Thanks in advance

Yes it can be done, but what router do you have? If it's a typical domestic broadband router the answer will be "no"; it'll only have one Ethernet interface (never mind the built-in switch on the back), so it'll only sit on one IP network.

If you router doesn't support it, you could always put ddwrt or tomato on it, that would give you vlan functionality. Also, if it is for your home you can't have that many computers and server so you could just make 2 subnets of 192.168.1.0 with 2 /25s

192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.127 255.255.255.128
192.168.1.128 - 192.168.1.255 255.255.255.128

each subnet would give you 126 useable addresses, 125 after router IP.

PS, this type of question should be in the network forum.
