Erratic GPU Usage

Thread Starter
I have been having an issue with my 570 lately.
I have overclocked it to the stable (according to 2x30 minute OCCT tests) 900 core/2100mem.
As you can see from the attached image, when I am playing crysis 2 MAXED OUT, the gpu usage is extremely erratic. I'm currently running the 275.33 drivers, and the same stuff happens on the latest betas. I have vsync enabled and it caps at 50 fps. But as you can probably tell I get random drops in framerate, making it extremely hard to play. Can anyone help please?

Pretty much the same thing, but no. It's stable in Crysis though, apart from the erratic usage.

Nvidia doesn't work as well with AMD processors. Try to get your max overclock with your CPU with stock and see if that helps. Also, is this only with Crysis 2 or other games and are you running it in Dx11?

Just tried BC2. Still happening, but not as badly. Oh and that OC I have with my cpu is already a 700Mhz oc with the stock cooler, so yeah, that's high enough already, and it's definitely not bottlenecking my gpu. Also I just want to point out that this never used to happen. I hopped on today and it just started doing it, it wasn't like this before.

EDIT: Tried Crysis 2 and BC2 again with stock clocks (750core/2000mem) and still erratic usage.

While the X6's aren't known for their single-core performance, you shouldn't need to overclock them to keep up with a single 570. I'd recommend upgrading to the 280.19 drivers. I'm not sure it would fix it, but utilization problems are often due to drivers. (remember to clean install)

So if I use driver cleaner when I boot into safe mode, what do I have to clean? It comes up with nForce chipset, nVidia, nVidia stereo and nVidia WDM. Do I have to clean all of these?

Still weird usage dips after clean installing latest betas. Any more ideas? Also I got a driver crash whilst playing Crysis 2. From what I've experienced before, shouldn't the gpu be coasting at a constant 99% usage while I'm playing a game?

EDIT: So according to the graphs in Afterburner, the clocks are dynamically changing throughout the time that I play the game? What the hell? How does this make sense and why is it happening?

The clocks changing while gaming, shouldn't be happening, obviously. I mean ... unless the game is like SUPER easy to run ... like World of Goo easy ... they should stay at full 3d clocks the whole time.

You might as well try the 'force max performance' option in the Power Mgt. section of the NVCP. I'd use the Crysis 2 gaming profile, don't do it universally. This will probably fix the shifting clocks and wildly erratic usage, however ... it may not fix the low FPS problem.

But give it a try, let us know what happens

I would definitely also remove the OC, if you haven't already tried that ... it looks like you have. I would try a restart after resetting the clocks, and making sure you don't have 'OC on startup' set in AB ... cause this very much looks like an unstable OC/throttling situation going on

Thanks for the reply mate, thread went dead for a bit there. I just changed it to max performance and the lowest it seemed to go with usage was about 60% at one dip. But isn't that still too low? As I said earlier I thought it would be running at 99% continuously, not dipping to 60% randomly. And as for the frames they improved a lot, hovering around 50 maxed out on crysis 2. Also the GPU clocks didn't randomly change this time, which is a relief.
