Not as popular because the 295 probably wasnt $1000 brand new , not many people have that $$ to spend on one graphics card .

things are abit different to the gtx295 days .
Again, the 590 has a hard enough time getting to stock GTX580 clocks. Let alone overclocked 580 speeds. The 580 SLI will win hands down every time. Plus, you don't have to worry about VRM fires with the 580's.

The "burning issue" is insignificant, unless you're one of those who installs drivers from the cd "that comes with the card". It was being caused by the old driver that was packed with them failing to implement power management on the card (driver issue, not hardware issue). This is all over the web so I won't cite any refs as you have google there to help.

Anyway, as everyone has already told you, it is a simple thing:
Due to power and cooling constrains on the design, one 590 will never match two 580s in SLI. It's performance is more comparable to a 570 sli AT STOCK SPEED (2 x 570 are cheaper than 1 x 590, as you know), and you have very little overclocking room.
So, it is kind of a dumb choice unless you can't do SLI for some reason.

Of coarse 2 individual 580's would take the lead

If you're looking for a single card , the 590 is your choice .

2x590's beat 3x580's and cost $100 less .

gtx590 also have less heat issues than the 580 , from what iv heard .

They both have their pro's and con's , though the gtx590 is scarse and i dont see them being around for too long .. i would grab one while i can before they vanish from stores .. if thats what i chose

i would personally take the 6990 , ati fanboy i guess .
