EVGA GTX 560 Ti DS Bottleneck?

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, just a quick question.

I currently have a BFG GTX 260 core 216 installed in my system, and I'm looking to upgrade to a new EVGA GTX 560 Ti DS graphics card. However, as some of my computer's components are aging, I'm worried that the new card will be bottlenecked so much that it is pointless to upgrade. The old parts are as follows (in sig too):

AMD Phenom Quad Core 9550 @ 2.2GHz-
Probably the most likely culprit to bottleneck, no?

Foxconn Bengal RS780 Motherboard.-
GPU-Z says it's running in PCIe 1.1 but it does run the GTX260, so is it PCIe2.0? And if it is PCIe1.1, will that bottleneck the card?
My current card says PCI-E x16 @ x16 in GPU-Z so i assume i'm using all 16 lanes. http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERB...06272Rnv.shtml

6GB of DDR2 800Mhz RAM-
I don't know why this would bottleneck the card.

Everything else in my computer is upgraded and new.

I really want to upgrade to this card but if it's not going to work or give me any performance increase I might as well not get it and save up for a new motherboard, ram, and cpu.

Thanks for your help!

As always (do I ever get tired of repeating myself, you ask? Why yes, yes I do!), the degree of CPU bottlenecking that will occur depends on the test you run (i.e. what game/bench), and what settings you run it at (resolution, AA, all the image quality settings).

You see, different tests will require different levels of CPU work per frame rendered, and the higher the IQ settings, the lower the FPS will be, and hence the less strain will be put on the CPU as it tries to feed the GPU the needed info.

The worst case scenario with CPU bottlenecking is that when you upgrade your card, you get the same FPS you get now. HOWEVER, you'll be able to attain that same FPS with much higher image quality settings.

So if you're contemplating upgrading because you physically cannot get games to run well no matter how low you put the settings ... OR you're contemplating upgrading because you're desperate to break world records in old, easy-to-run benchmarks like 3dMark06 ... you probably won't be happy with this upgrade.

However, if you CAN get games to run satisfactorily by lower your IQ settings, and all you're hoping to accomplish by the upgrade is to be able to play them with HIGHER IQ settings ... then this step-up in the GPU department should please you.

Can you really not get that chip over 2.2GHz? I know the original Phenom's aren't good OC'ers, but you should at least be able to push it up a bit, can't you? Every little bit will help with this scenario you're looking at

EDIT: don't worry about the PCI-Ex situation. 16 lanes at PCI-Ex 1.1 is still plenty for any card, aside from perhaps a GTX590 or HD6990 (dual GPU cards, IOW).

Hmm, thanks for the quick responses. So right now I'm getting ok fps in games like mw2 or age of empires (like 40-60) with maxed out settings at 1080p, but I really want 100+ fps in those games and the ability to play more hungry games like crysis and BF3 when it comes out. From brettjv's post it seems like I should be fine, but I'm not sure. Also, I want to do some folding. With the GTX 260 I get around 6000 ppd, I saw somewhere a guy was getting almost 14k ppd with the gtx 560 ti ds. Would I be able to even get close to this?

P.S. I bought the processor in a gateway computer so I can't overclock it, it's locked...

Thanks for the help!

You will need a New CPU. GTX260 is a lot better GPU the 9550 is as a CPU. Now a days even 4.0Ghz PII is not very fast and you are at 2.2Ghz PI. Use the money to get something like PII 955.

For folding there is no concern about being bottlenecked by the rest of the hardware.
For folding you could even run it off a PCIe x1 slot and not have a significant performance loss.
My GTX560 Ti folding card is getting 15.5-21.5k ppd, depending on the work unit, in a system that has a Phenom x4 9650 CPU @2.31Ghz and older MSI AM2 socket microATX motherboard.
It is water cooled and has been running at 2200 shader clock for a few weeks straight, I just bumped it up to 2230 shader clock a couple of days ago.

I haven't gamed or run any gaming/video benchmarks on that system though.

Thanks for the info Caleal, it's nice to know I can do some great folding without worrying about the lower end parts ruining my ppd count. What are your other clocks on that card and where did you get the water block, I didn't know there was an "official" one yet.

It has been running at 1100 core, 2200 shader, stock memory @1.15v
Yesterday I bumped it up to 1110 core, 2220 shader, 2200 memory, still at 1.115v. Hasn't dropped any work units at the new clock yet.

The water block is a Heatkiller GPU-X3 "hole eddition".

Ok well thanks for all the help, I still just can't decide whether to spend $550 on a EVGA p67 ftw, core i5 2500k, and 8GB vengeance ram or to spend $230 on a new GTX 560 graphics card. God why can't I get both?!?!
