it's a lot mkv file with bad resolution, who encoded this movies they not did right so try another file and see. if you have the same problem , you need codec uninstall all codec that you have and install this one here
PS: remember , if you have installed many different's codec you should have problem's like you posted above, codec works like a car, one motor and one driver, if you have more than one codec that does the same job you got a conflict one well for 2 drivers.

CCCP: Combined Community Codec Pack is a codec pack specifically built for playing videos (including mkv).

PLayer use this

MediaPlayer Classic

VLC media player for Windows

I did a little search and didn't find one either.

The reason I asked is because I see this type of thing on my LED TV. I see it with my recorded TV and Bluray rips with no reencoding-just the original format in BDMV folders. I was thinking it may have been do to the zone lighting that the LED TV uses but if this is a plasma the OP has then that would kill my idea. I guess I should try to hook up the TV to the cable and see if I get the same.

I have a Vizio M470VT its LED LCD 47" and im jumping into this conversation because you posted Harry Potter and I HAVE THE SAME problem, it got worse at the Half blood prince, movie is sooo dark. Its so dark I cant even see the actors, what do you guys use to calibrate your tvs? First and last movie I watched with my tv it bumbed me out so much.

I will try that codec and the software skyn3t posted, seeing as his PC shares the same 555 and GPU as me ^^ man must know his stuff

I personally use nvidia's ntune to calibrate my monitors/tv's, since I use an nvidia card in all my systems. I noticed you do not use nvidia, I'm sure that ATI has something similar.
